Converting a FWD to a RWD

We look at converting a front wheel drive car to rear wheel drive. Problems and shortcuts and suggestions for a FWD to RWD conversion project guide. For this reason, most high power cars and motorsport cars have a rear wheel drive setup. Even front engined street cars are converted with a mid mounted engine and rear wheel drive.

Cars are more fun to drive when the power is to the back wheels. It makes for lots of oversteer rather than the safer and more predictable understeer manufacturers build into FWD cars.

Low ratio sport gearbox setup and selection.

Gearbox – Lower ratios give better acceleration times and lower fuel economy. Six or seven speed boxes are better matched to modern engines.

Most street applications are closer 1st and 2nd gear ratios for that off the line 0-60 boost or for the fast exec a lower 2nd and 3rd ratio give improved overtaking flexibility and 30 – 70 mph acceleration with a high 4th and 5th gear to give motorway fuel economy.

Benefits and drawbacks of engine water injection systems

You’ve finished tuning up your engine but you find that at full throttle the engine splutters or stalls. When you get the car on a diagnostic you find that the knock sensor is kicking in to protect the engine.

Engine knock is a condition where the fuel inside the engine ignites prematurely and occurs within an engine running at high compression. (It can also be caused by other factors including low octane/poor quality fuel or hot spots within the engine.)

Cryogenic engine treatments

When putting more power through an engine you need to ensure that every part will perform at its optimum.

One of the motorsports favourite techniques to improve the durability of an engine is a process know as cryogenic treatments.

As you can guess from the use of the word Cryo – it involves the cooling and heating of the engine block to temper the metal changing its structure.
