A site visitor asked questions for more information on the QX60 and how to tune it up and modify it, so this web page has been assembled to go over what we feel are the primary areas we rate and are the best tuning modifications you can do to this engine.

The QX60 is a great car modification project to carry out. Plan ahead and research QX60 tuning to spare yourself making the usual disastrous errors we regularly hear about.

 

 

Handling/Suspension upgrades

Handling modifications are often a priority for the QX60.

If you set the toe out to 0.8 to 1.3 degrees on the front, and add some negative camber then cornering will usually benefit.

We would go to a maximum drop of 30mm - 40 mm. on most models. You risk grounding out if you go lower than this.

Adding meatier brake discs and better performance pads can make for radically improved braking.

We should point out that some performance brake pads will be noisy and will need to be really hot before they start to work.

On a road car the brakes are only used rarely, therefore will not be effective so specify pads which work well in daily use.

Our aim in engine tuning should be to increase peak power and torque at the top end.

Smaller engines do not provide much of a return in terms of power so start with a bigger engine. Engine swaps are a good option if you have a small engine size.

Engine Tuning.

Typically these modified upgrades are usually carried out by our members, decide how far you wish to go in your tuning project before you get started.

Getting the correct grade of tuning upgrade kits for your planned usage of the car is a time and money saver. Stage 3 motor sport parts just don't work well on the road making the car difficult to drive.

Best Engine Mods for your car

1. Engine Tunes - engine tuning/remapping provides the most advantage in terms of cost savings,  aftermarket ECUs, and piggyback ECUs are all alternatives.
2. Fast road cams are one of the most significant mechanical changes, but they must be installed by someone who knows what they're doing and they are not always easy to source but you might find a local firm to regrind a stock camshaft.
3. Intake and Exhaust - Note that on their own these mods will NOT ADD POWER in most cases, but they can help enhance power after other mods by removing the restriction.
4. Upgrades to turbochargers and superchargers - forced induction is the most efficient approach to increase air supply, allowing you to burn more fuel and make more power. It is one of the most costly upgrades but provides the best gains.
5. Head work - The goals of porting and flowing the head are to get air flowing into the engine while removing flow restrictions and turbulence.

Typical stage 1 mods often include: Suspension upgrade (drop 30mm - 40 mm.), Engine Tunes/Remapping, Lighter flywheel, Alloy wheels, Sports exhaust, Panel air filter.

Typical stage 2 mods often include: Power/Sport clutch, fuel pump upgrades, Fast road cam, Ported and polished head, high flow fuel injector.

Typical stage 3 mods often include: Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Engine balancing, Sports gearbox, Competition cam.

You should keep as much low end power as you can and aim to achieve a wide power band across the rev range rather than a narrow top end power spike.

In this article we shall give a brief overview to the best performance parts for your car, but we'd encourage you to spend some time on the site looking into the details of each type of performance modification.Fast road cams offer one of the biggest performance gains for your money as far as a solitary modified modifications goes on a NA (naturally aspirated) engine.

It maximises the intake and exhaust durations and pushes up the power if done right. Ideally you'd add other mods and finish up with a performance chip. TorqueCars would caution you not to go with a motor sport cam as this upsets the engines idling and general town driving characteristics.

When pushing up the power you will need to look at to the fuelling. More power needs more fuel.

Frequently power losses, and erratic idling after uprated kits are done can usually be traced to fuelling or timing issues. Bigger injectors will enable you to supply sufficient fuel to the engine.

Uprate the fuel pump to cope with the extra fuel requirements of your tuned QX60's uprated injectors.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

Breathing mods are usually next up.  Please note that WE DO NOT FEEL YOU GET POWER GAINS FROM INDUCTION KITS, unless you have tuned your car with over 30 percent more power and are finding that the standard air intake has become a restriction.

Induction kits can work well on turbo engines and larger engines (if supplied with a suitable cold air feed or air box), generally though we'd just recommend for QX60 engines you should just fit a performance panel air filter preferably made from cotton.

Do not go with the widest exhaust you can buy this will slow up the exhaust flow rate - the best exhausts for power gains are usually between 1.5 to 2.5 inches. It is the shape and material more than the bore size.

Head work including a gas flow (ported and polished) and 3 or 5 angle valve job will really help to release the potential of the engine. Your clutch can lose you loads of power as the power goes up if it starts to complain and the standard clutches are only ever good for power gains of up to 48%. Fit a competition clutch to avoid power loss through the transmission. The best mods in our opinion for your QX60 are remaps, sports camshafts and induction improvements.

NA (naturally aspirated) engines do not achieve big power gains if you tune/remap them, unless you have done extensive modifications. With turbocharged engines this is another story. A tuned/remapped turbo will give large power gains and take full advantage of the strength of the block. Despite the large cost involved adding forced induction to a NA (naturally aspirated) engine will give large power gains. Superchargers are generally easier to add than a turbo. With a turbo the boost curve is related exponentially to the engine speed making it harder to map.

It is easier to map a supercharger because the boost is directly proportional to engine speed on a linear curve. To cope with forced induction you will usually need to decrease the engines compression ratio .

Alloy wheel upgrades.

The benefits of alloys include a lower unsprung weight and more efficient brake cooling via the extra air flow they allow. Pay attention to your choice of tyres (tires) for your car, a good track legal slick tire can really enhance your cars handling. We'd like to point out although they can look cool on the QX60 large alloy wheels will actually decrease your performance. The larger you go the lower your acceleration will be - this to the change in your effective final drive ratio.

Due to this we would advise sticking to a maximum wheel size of 19 inches, although we know some of our members have installed larger rims with no problems.
