How much do you think is reasonable to ask off the value of a car at a dealers?

Is there a percentage, do you just pay the asking price, do you go by the "book" price?

Is it worth paying dealer prices when you can get the same car a lot cheaper privately?

Not sure about a set percentage off, but I haggle until "I" am happy with the price. If the salesman shakes hands on the deal and has a face like a sulking 5 year old then I know the price was right for me ;)

I work on the basis that you cant insult a car salesman with an offer to buy one of his cars so I would start a lot lower than I hope to get the car at
Making an offer , however low , does show you are serious so you will have his attention whatever he thinks (or says he thinks ) of your offer
PLUS OF COURSE YOU CAN NEGOTIATE UP BUT NOT DOWN

I absolutely HATE haggling. I will only resort to it if the price is WAY overpriced (like a car that's worth 8 grand and they want 13 grand for it).
For new cars, a number of car company's over here are switching to "Pure Price" policies, meaning no haggling and no dealer mark-ups. Saturn and Scion was/is famous for it. Some GM dealers (Chevrolet/GMC|Buick/Cadillac. depends on the dealer in question) have switched to it as well. Even Tesla uses it.

Always haggle and in your mind you already have a price you are prepared to pay. If the deal is not in the same ballpark I always walk away. If they grab you then you know you are going to get there. If they let you go then a clear signal they are not interested and just plain greedy. New car sales are harder but you can get things thrown in to make it sweeter. Plus always pays to have a few other dealer options to visit and play off each other as they want repeat business.

I knew my siggie had been sat at the dealers for nearly 3 months. I knew noone wants big engined vauxhalls. So offered him 20 percent less than the asking price.

No idea. Never bought a car from a dealer. Though, to be fair, I have always knocked money off every car I have bought.

Escort £375 with Tax and MOT. Asking price £400 with Mot
Mazda - £2300 with TAX. Asking price £3500 with Tax
Prelude - £0. Asking price £500 (kind of stole that one :blink1:)
Evo - £9000 with MOT, TAX, Service 4 new tyres. Asking price £10000 with MOT
Volvo - £1500 with Tax and MOT, Asking price £1600 with MOT
