Have you ever witnessed a bad accident? Did it shake you up and affect your driving style?

Thankfully I've not seen anything more dramatic than a Capri skidding off a wet road. I've seen the aftermarth of some shocking accidents though and I'm really glad I hadn't seen it happen.

I take my hat off to the emergency services who deal with bad crashed on a regular basis - certainly not something I could do.

Yes I was driving along in an Escort van and a woman was travelling in the opposite direction in a Peugeot 405. We was on a slight bend in icy conditions and as she was approaching me I saw she was loosing the back end of her car. She came past me nearly taking the back off the van out and she went across the back off my van up the curb on my side of the road tried to correct it and then went head on into a 7.5tonne lorry. She didn't survive, it was fatal and her 2 kids did survive with minor injuries.
And yes for weeks all I could think about was that accident. I was so close t being involved in it. It never stopped me driving I just couldn't get the sight out my head.

Saw my girlfriend ditch her car on the left, fly up out of the dich, spin 180 and fly sideways into the bush on the opposite side of the road all in my rear view mirror.

#!#!#!#! me up a bit - but the airbags did their stuff and she walked away from it.

Car was a write off. The chassis was bent to buggery, even the battery went backwards through the airbox.

Car was a mk4 Golf V5 170. Lovely motor in metallic black. Shame its no more... but it 'did its stuff' and she emerged unharmed - so im happy enough.

I had a serious one on 24th June this year and I'm still suffering emotionally and mentally.

Bruised by pre-tensioning seatbelts and scalded by airbags I got away physically OK except that I still don't have full use of lower right leg - can only walk or drive very short distances.

But this is nothing compared to the psychological after effects.

this is bad mate i have a had a few minor smacks and a couple of high speed close calls but these never really affected me in anyway cause i was young and dumb!
but now at 31 with a daughter a wife and a mortgage i think my whole perception of driving has changed and i probably would be the same as you now!

It's been a horrible experience. I'm 39, also married, and have 2 children aged 8 and 12. They. too have been affected, despite the fact that:-

Thankfully, I was driving alone when the accident happened. Other party emerged without looking from side road straight across me (60mph main road, bright and dry conditions) leaving me with about 3 car lengths to play with!

No-one spent more than 12 hours in casualty, physical injuries to all were minor given the severity of the impact.

loads.

most of the outside my house.
we live on a double bend and all the chavs try to get round them as fast as poss.

we have lost the fence twice.
lamp post 5 times
telegraph pole twice
and no end of kerbs

they have been upside down
rolled
buried in hedges
on fire
you name it.

had one that rolled 5 times and when we got to it the driver and passenger legged it, drunk.

best one was a car had hit the lamp post and while the police were there sorting it out another twat came round the corner, lost it and smashed into the police car.:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

no one killed yet, which is very lucky as the school is only 100yards away.

Don't revel in it. RTAs are nasty.

yes i agree.
but all of these were either done by drunk drivers or chavs racing in a 30 zone past a school.
i'm sorry but i have no sympathy for them.

It would indeed be tragic if these morons hit an innocent bystander.

As long as it is themselves and their cars they are smashing up no-one worries but as soon as an innocent is injured or killed there is a big clampdown and action is usually taken.

This action usually means everyone else has stupidly low speed limits and traffic calming to contend with.

I am constantly amazed at morons down our way who can fall off a perfectly straight road.

It's possible to have no sympathy without revelling in someone else's demise or injury.

What's wrong with revelling in someone else's demise and injury if it's their fault and no innocent people were involved? I find it hilarious. If you act like a tw*t you have to expect to be treated like a tw*t.

I have to say I agree. It's a bit like this muppet. Vandalising a wall. But he gets off worst. My god it must have hurt him bad.

But to be honest I found it funny that someone was stupid enough to do it in the first place.

Ive had one while traveling north out of Las Vegas a couple years back. 3 lane freeway and this SUV decided that 75 wasn't fast enough so he was swerving around all the vehicles, like a drift track. Lost controll and wound up underneath an 18 wheeler. Driver and front passenger didn't stand a chance as the trailer just shaved off the top. Rear passengers (couple of kids around 8 to 12) were pretty bad off, not sure if they made it. Had the entire freeway stopped for 6 hours.

Before that would occasionally push the car on empty roads, have yet to go more than 5 over or not signal since.
