Which engine has the most distinctive engine note?

I think the Boxers sound fantastictic, what about the scream of a VTEC at full chat, old Beetle engines have a very distinctive engine note and who can beat the burble of a lazy V8?

What is your favourite engine when it comes to noise?

VAG's V5 had a lovely off beat howl when revved enthusiastically.

I also like the 535d's combination of muted 6 cylinder growl along with a pair of turbos screaming under full load.

Toyota's V6 (Camry and Land Cruiser) is nice as well.

the 6 cylinder bmw engine has a very distinctive note, but its true about vtec
around my place i know its a vtec even if i dont see it

The Subaru H4's are very distinctive indeed. That's actually a good answer.

All I listed was a couple of cars who engines' aural characteristics are pleasing to me.

That doesn't really make then distinctive, I suppose.

The old A series fitted to early Metros had a distinctive whine in first and second gears (probably mostly due to the antiquated rather than the engine itself). Did I like it? Not one bit. But it was certainly distinctive.
