What is it that gives a V8 engine that very distinctive rumble?

Is it down to the engine volume, angles of cylinders or is there some other aspect to the sound that I'm missing? Perhaps it's down to the intake or exhaust?

I think someone has been watchin the latest Top Gear special lol. They describe the different firings on there. But the V8 is well known for being an off balanced engine.

I've not seen that yet, was it on over Christmas? If so I should be able to catch up on iplayer!

Even the V6 and straight six engines have varying firing orders. When I was running V8 engined race cars I knew there were different firing orders depending on the engines origin. Was a pita when rebuilding and having to remember the order of the leads!
