My car put up a fault light the other day, under full bore acceleration, and it reset itself after switching off and back on.

Had ECU interrogated by local specialist (for free!).....

Intermittent misfire logged; Cylinder #5

They suggest replacing plugs (they're 60,000 miles old so even for iridium ones that's fair) and a new plug-top coil on that cylinder.

Sounds plausible to me, anyone have any other ideas?

That sounds perfectly plausible to me too. Under the circumstances I applaud your garage for being so honest, many out there would have been very cheeky with the real cause of the misfire and emptied your wallet.

Could be the plugs, are the leads in good condition? If they are the original leads it might be worth replacing them just to be safe.

You only need 4 cylinders anyway so don't worry about it ;)

No HT leads Waynne, it's 12 volts all the way to each (of the SIX) coils. If there was a fracture in a 12v lead the misfire would not be intermittent.

Four cylinders is quite adequate I agree, I have a new Peugeot 508 1.6 HDi diesel on loan and it's extremely impressive. No, not as rapid as the 528i, nowhere near as rapid as my remapped 2.2 HDi was. Slightly less refined than both but.......

Averaging 64mpg!!!! It's a compelling argument and £30/annum VED road tax!!

Must admit I'd be very tempted by the Peugeot's sensational economy. It's not noisy, it's not rough and it's not slow.

Just that the BMW is near silent, perfectly smooth anywhere in the rev range and significantly quicker. Despite 142,000 miles !!!!

There's still something appealing about a straight six engine and it's inherent smoothness, achieved with no balancer shafts at all!!
