hi ive got a 1996 Honda prelude that i just cant get to run at its full potential im new to hondas so im not sure what to try first

What is the mileage it has covered? A compression test will tell you the condition of the engine.
Are you using the full rev range, some people who are new to Hondas change up far too soon. Wait for the VTEC to kick in and see how you get on.
