What does GTi stand for

I know what a GTI is but what does it stand for? Is there a definition for a GTI?

Classically Grand Tourer Injection.
It started when direct injection was the big thing and replaced carburetors as an upgrade (rather than the standard it is now).

I've seen it applied to quite large cars, but most people think hot hatch when they see GTi.

Didn't charade do a GTTi just to confuse everyone, and then we have the GTTdi thrown into the mix as well!
