Taking bulky items to the dump

As I live enroute from the dump I frequently see cars loaded up with rubbish.

Most drivers leave it hanging out of the back with the rear open and usually tied down with a bungy rope. The loads vary from garden rubbish to armchairs and fridge freezers.

If you had to transport something large to the rubbish dump how would you do it.

Borrow my mums Freelander. But I have been known to leave the boot open and tie things down. I once fetched a 3 seater sofa in an Escort Mk5.
 
usually in the folks car but before (as their were 7 of us already squashed in the car) we had a small trailer (like the ones they sell at halfords only much older and more lightweight) with an Escort CVH engine strapped in. not a good idea with no independent suspension on the trailer.
