the veyron is a W16 type of engine correct ? 2 V8's stuck together in laymans terms (thats my level) so why havent manufactors done this with other engines, like a flat 12 or is this even possible ? or is just no point ?

if you double the capacity you double the power (in theory) so why not do it ?

its not wuite as simple as bolting 2 engines together
VW have done it in the past where they made a W8 but it doesnt means double the power

size wise the engines are smaller than there V length counterparts, well shorter anyway

Ferrari used to make a flat 12 that went into their racing cars like the 330 P4 plus a few other le mans racers,

Don't forget VW or the VAG is the most profitable car manufacturer out there so it can afford to throw money at some silly projects every now and again lol

I have mentioned it before but i called them the wealthiest which isn't strictly true.

They have some serious dealings with Porsche and the stock market meaning without selling hundreds of thousands of cars they are constantly making money hand over fist

Cost would be the biggest issue here.

This is true! I read somewhere that the Veyron costs more to make than it is actually sold for by a factor of five! It is merely a marketing ploy to showcase their engineering excellence! How many manufacturers can afford to make a car and sell at a loss just for showing off? not many I think :)

what they base that info on is also the development costs for the whole program, the factory (which looks like something NASA would be envious of) all the equipment and materials to build the them, but they are worth more than the sum of their parts

With the combination of the engines these days such as the W8, W12 and W16 engines. I still believe one of the better ways to do this is not bolt the engines together and hope double the power, but instead, use 2 whole engines sperately.

There is a golf running 2 VR6 engines, Both turbo'd and obviously running 4x4, check it out...

Yup, you got it. Not sure if it still exists but there used to be a twin red top turbo engine'd Calibra with each engine running a safe 400bhp, so 800bhp with permenent drive to all 4 wheels. Yess please. But have a look at the vids I just put up, you will how fast it really can make a car and a hell of alot cheaper.

These W engines have the pistons arranged in a staggered pattern which I would reckon would make the crank shorter and thus lighter but the heads on them would be huge not to mention the fact each head has 4 camshafts,

A W8 seems like a waste of time,
W 12 seems a pretty good idea
W16 is a way better idea than a V16 in term of packaging.

that 306 is lovely, really well finished and bloody quick!!

most of the twin engined cars i've seen look a little agricultural, almost unfinished projects the bare essentials and that's it

Yeah I know, if you speak to HDi (Paul) about Pug1off he speaks highly of them.
He had his 406 serviced by said people and he has spoken to the bloke whgo made that.

It is really nicely finished, and I do like it, but personally though I wouldn't make such a good job cause after all I wouldn't be showing it, I'd be driving it!

Another car I've seen recently is a twin engined 205 with 2 Pegueot 405 MI16 engine in it, they use the whole front end off another 205 and transplanted into the rear, and used 2 sets of front suspension and the like...
