80's Hot hatch to beat a current Leon Cupra

Can you find an 80's Hot hatch that will beat a current Leon Cupra or at least hold it's own against a modern hot hatch?

This was inspired by the TopGear item but I don't think they chose the right cars at all! Nova SRi What was that all about!

Very few youths could afford an Escort turbo, so they just bought the badges and stuck them on their 1.1 and 1.3L Escorts

I can't stand Corsa VXR's. Considering they have 200bhp, they're pretty gutless.

What a lot of you might be seeing as a Corsa VXR are Corsa 1.2s with VXR kit, I see lots of these round Cov way.

So many MG's are written off. Even my first year on the 1.4 was £1500! It's now £800 which is better.

i could not agree more they must be the most common car for under 25s now for what they cost you there are so many better cars out there i no a girl payed £16k for a nuremburg edition near me £200 a month on finance

I know its just out of the 89s but in1990 you could buy a nissan pulsar GTiR. 220 ps and stock it was way way quicker 0-60 than a cupra.

There was also a turbo pulsar in the 80s Im not sure how quick it was although certainly nowhere near the GTiR

Or going the other way into the late 70's, HS or HSR Chevett, or Lotus Sunbeam

You see the odd imported one, it was the car that made me decide to do my car.

Lancia Delta HF Integrale - bit exotic but it would keep up. Renault 5 GT Turbo 2 would do also, bit of a death trap but disgustingly rapid.

Virtually none of the early jap turbo cars were imported.
There was also a small quite early colt that was turbod and that was insane

They can all be imported now but with duties and VAT end uo too expensive so they are pretty rare.
