    Insurance Groups to premiums

No probs...yeah I thought there wouldn't be an easy answer to this one. Probably best to ignore groups and just base everything on quotes for different cars.

    Insurance Groups to premiums

Has anyone ever come across or know of a why to find out the rough cost of an insurance premium in relation to an insurance group? I know that usually with insurance there are a lot of variables involved, but just wondered if there is a general guideline anywhere. Cheers

Most enjoyable drive - from a reasonably priced car...

Hehe...yeah, I recently got the diesel bug too! Originally got it after driving a Kia Cee'd 1.6 CRDi LS courtesy car, when the turbo kicks in on that it's incredibly fun. Couldn't afford one of those unfortunately, so invested in a Corsa 1.7 CDTi - not as fun, even though it's better on paper...

Most enjoyable drive - from a reasonably priced car...

Have there been any cars (reasonably priced..say under 15K) you've (anybody) driven which have really surprised you in regards to power and acceleration? Look forward to hearing your experiences.

I want to try out a Porsche...

Yeah, I've done that before, but I really want to get a feel for what they're like on the road as I'm considering investing in a (slightly old) boxster sometime in the future. I suppose a day with one would be enough to get an idea of what they're like to drive.

21 ...er well actually I'm 42 - still younger than most of the Top Gear guys!

I want to try out a Porsche...

Anybody know of a cheap, performance car hire company. There are loads out there, but the cheapest I've found so far is £165 per day, which, if you want to try the car out for more than a day - is quite a lot. Let me know if you have. Thanks

How good is the Porsche Boxster?

Just wondering about this as I've heard both good and bad things about the Boxter. What I keep reading about is common problems with the oil seals, which seem to cost a lot to get repaired and there seems to be a problem with the gears crunching from 1st to 2nd - has anyone come across these...

ECU remap for the new Corsa 1.7 CDTi?

Most of these sites will quote for the old Corsa - the new Corsa (D), 1.7 comes with a basic 123bhp - so I'm expecting to get around 150bhp after a remap. As far as insurance goes, I'm definitely not doing anything until I get a quote and see what the difference is - one of the main reasons for...

ECU remap for the new Corsa 1.7 CDTi?

gcltuning look like they can do it and at only £310 for their mobile service. I'm waiting on the others. Just need to figure out how much more it's going to cost me in insurance - hopefully not too much more, as that's part of the reason why I got a diesel - low insurance premiums!

ECU remap for the new Corsa 1.7 CDTi?

Anybody ever heard of one of these being done, 'cause I'm having terrible trouble finding a company that'll do it. I've tried all the obvious ones and they don't do it. It seems the new Astra 1.7 is supported, so why not the Corsa!? Thanks

Is this a turbo thing...or is there something wrong!?

Got really angry with the car this morning, felt like there was next to nothing in 1st & 2nd gear - I know there's supposed to be some turbo lag, but even the turbo doesn't feel that impressive when it kicks in. What I can't understand is why a Kia Cee'd 1.6 CRDi LS has so much more kick in it...

Is this a turbo thing...or is there something wrong!?

The whole thing was dissapointing! Never got to speak to a mechanic, the girl on reception just handed me a filled in form, which looked like they'd just done a service and basically there was no feedback from anybody. Really don't know about the ECU much, so couldn't say. I reckon when I get...

Is this a turbo thing...or is there something wrong!?

Took it into a Network Q garage on Fri - they couldn't find anything wrong with it, although it is an intermittent problem. So I guess I'll stick with it and see how it goes!

Is this a turbo thing...or is there something wrong!?

Got it booked in at my local Vauxhall dealers, they should know what they're talking about. I'll let you know what they find - hopefully it won't be anything too serious! Cheers.

Is this a turbo thing...or is there something wrong!?

Thanks for all the advice guys - I'm experiencing something else as well which I think is connected, sometimes when the engine is idling the revs will be erratic, usually dropping from about 800-400 about every second for about 10 secs and then it calms down again. I'm wondering if the spark...

Is this a turbo thing...or is there something wrong!?

Waynne, this is happening only when I accelerate and it particularly doesn't like it if I accelerate in a higher gear. HDI - what exactly is the DMF? Cheers

Is this a turbo thing...or is there something wrong!?

I should hope so! The car was first registered in Aug '07, so it's virtually new.

Is this a turbo thing...or is there something wrong!?

Had my 1.7 CDTi Vauxhall Corsa for a couple of weeks now, but am finding that occasionally when I'm pulling away I'm getting a kind of jerking thing going on & it can be quite a jump sometimes. It's seems to tend to happen when I'm pulling away in a higher gear, like second gear when I've...

    Help with driving a diesel

will definitely get some quotes before I do anything. I imagine there are some 'specialist' insurers that are better to use in the case of customised cars. I'll have a look around. Cheers

    Help with driving a diesel

Thanks, that's really helpful - I mean 10% on top of an already much lower premium for a diesel is, in my opinion a small price to pay for the increase in performance and mpg you get from a remap - just need to find the cash for initial outlay for the remap now!!

    Help with driving a diesel

hmm..that's interesting, now that has cheered me up! Just out of interest, generally speaking what kind of insurance sting do you get if you remap - I mean is it quite a jump or just a little more expensive?

This is true, but wouldn't that cost another £500 or so to reverse the remap!?

    Help with driving a diesel

Thanks guys, that's really helpful and explains what's going on. I would definitely like to remap at some stage, but am a bit apprehensive in regards of if I ever wanted to sell or part exchange the car - would it put people off knowing that it's remapped? They might think I'm a boy racer and...

    Help with driving a diesel

Just bought a 1.7 CDTi SXi Corsa - am really pleased with it although it doesn't seem to have quite the punch of the Kia Ceed 1.6 diesel that I drove a few months ago, despite being more powerful on paper. I've noticed that although there's not much power in first gear, the higher gears seem to...

    Advice needed...

Hi, I'm thinking of buying a BMW Z3 (probably the 2.0 Litre version) , obviously these are old cars now, but if I can find a relatively low mileage one (say under 40k), is this a sensible buy or in your opinions is this a bad idea taking into account running costs, parts etc.? Thanks in advance.

    What causes this sound?...

I'm not sure, but I think it's a Subaru Impreza - but it looks like quite an old one. The noise is really loud though, like those hydraulic brakes you get on buses and lorries.

    What causes this sound?...

There's a guy who drives past me like a maniac every morning when I'm on my way to work and everytime he changes gear there's a sound like a loud hydraulic piston, it seems to be when he puts the clutch down. He's obviously 'modded' his car quite a lot and it seems really fast - so was just...

'08 Reg effect on old cars

Just wondering if anyone can give me an idea of when prices will start to drop on used cars, now that the new reg's are out. The car I'm looking to get, according to the Parkers website should have depreciated by quite a lot in it's first year (as I'm sure most of them do), but does this mean...

    Can all diesels be mapped?

Anybody used tunit.co.uk? Just wondering if they're any good - it looks like they do the plugin ECU system rather than a remap, but I'm a newbie to this stuff and don't really understand the technicalities of this stuff.

Diesel mpg - way of driving?

I was just surprised by the fact that even though I was doing a lot of motorway driving, I still wasn't really getting close to the suggested, combined mpg. I mean, how do they arrive at these figures - do they just drive in a straight line, without over revving or under revving? People go by...

Diesel mpg - way of driving?

So, does over revving use more fuel or does under revving? Say if you frequently go over 4000rpm - would that use up more fuel than changing gears at 3000rpm? I've never really known how this works. Cheers

Diesel mpg - way of driving?

As I've mentioned in my previous post, I've been driving a Kia Cee'd 1.6 LS diesel recently (got it as a courtesy car) and I've absolutely loved it. One question though, although I've seen stated in several places that the combined mpg for a 1.6 diesel Cee'd should be 60mpg, I've only been...

    Can all diesels be mapped?

Cheers...well, of course I'm probably looking for the unlikely, but ideally would like a Cee'd (113bhp, so basically the LS) under £12k and which hasn't done a silly amount of miles. Optimistic I know, but I'm wondering now if getting the GS, which I think would be cheaper and then getting a...
