Why do some cars sound rubbish?

I may be biased but to my ears a 4G63 Mitsubishi sounds way better than an SR20 no matter what system is thrown at it even though they have the same number of cylinders,capacity and firing order.?-/
 
Intake, exhaust and sound deadening make a lot of difference. Subtle changes can dramatically alter the sound of a car.

That said I bet there are people who prefer the SR20 over the 4G63.

IMO - you can't beat a nice V8 burble, or the Impreza Boxer engine at tickover!
