Why aren't cars limited to 70mph

Why don't they limit cars to 70mph?! or whatever the legal maximum is in a country?

Could you make an argument against this logical decision that any sensible government could well propose and legislate for! ;)
 
Restriction of trade?

What good would it do? Everyone driving around flat out at 70 doesn't sound like a safety improvement to me.

Most crashes occur at speeds well below 70.

Cars bought in Germany would be unrestricted so grey imports would increase manyfold.

The people in power would not like their flash cars to be restricted.
 
It's pointless for the reasons OG states. I think it would lead to drivers adopting a false sense of safety thus reducing attention to their driving. Let's face it this is a common problem as things are now.

Nothing really to gain with a rigidly enforced speed limit either so speed limiters aren't going to assist anything in terms of safety.
