Can you do a decent repair on stone chips yourself. I have a 5mm bullseye in the drivers line of view so it will probably fail the MOT test. I dont have comperhensive insurance though so I have to pay the repair cost myself. I have seen kits but are they any good?

Well if its in your driving line, I would:

a) pay the extra and upgrade my insurance and get a new screen.

b) find a 2nd hand screen and bung the screen chap in the layby £25 to fit, I have done this.

c) Get a new screen fitted.

As for getting a repair kit, IMHO is a waste of money as you will have to put another screen in for the MOT.

I got a repair kit from Halfords and it worked quite well. It is best done on a fresh bullseye chip and all it left was a tiny pin prick. You squirt in the resin with a syringe and pump it a couple of times to expel the air. Then it hardens in the light and you have a mended windscreen.
