Hi Folks
Looking for some help with my Leon if possible. The car stutters and holds back at the top end of the revs maybe 4500-5000 rpm. If you feed the power in slowly it doesnt feel so bad but still holds back. The management light came on last week as well with PO0420 which is the CAT but it just passed its MOT and all the gas analyser info was okay. The light has been reset and hasnt came back on so far. I also feel as if the car is pinking sometimes under load. Any help would be grateful

Thanks in advance
Gary.. the newbee

sounds like it could be the MAF. you really need to get a diagnostic done (scanner wont be enough ) and watch the readings for misfires and airflow

if your getting alot of missing on one cylinder then swap the coilpack to another see if it moves. although the later ones had different packs and they seem alot more reliable also the coil packs would be more likely to cause an issue right through the range.

id be more likely to say the MAF is faulty. as it could be causing the pinking due to wrong amount of air being read so injecting too little / much fuel. - this is a very common issue on all VAG cars. the extra fuel may also have been the cause of the EM light for the cat.

Have you fitted an induction kit, or even an performance filter ? these can be too heavily oiled from the factory and under heavy throttle can cause the oil to be sucked off and stick to the MAF causing it to miss read.

try removing the MAF plug and run it on the generic 2D map rather than the full one as this generally will make it run better.

Do you have a Dump valve or any other mods fitted?

(Welcome to TorqueCars, good to have another VAG owner with us;).)

Hi Guys
Thanks very much for your replies and i will get a full diagnostic done on the car this weekend i hope. I have noticed yesterday it seemed to run okay but this morning its back to its usual again.
Wayne there is a dump valve fitted but not the usual noisey one, it was on the car when i got it so im not sure what type it is, would this cause the problem?
I will order the MAF sensor as well and get it done just in case, they are not very expensive so it might be worth it anyway.

Thanks again to everone will be in touch and let you know how it goes

Cheers
Gary

welcome gary
having gad a similar issue with my leon i would say pg is probably right but its worth doing a full diagnostic cause on mine the n75 valve had gone aswell as the maf i replaced both parts and the car was back to normal:D

and just incase you dont know the screws on the maf are security screws:mad:
so you will have to get the proper bit or if you have a multi pack of bits you may have 1 like this it does the job;)

as long as its a full recirculating one it should be fine ( 3 hoses off it ) forge 007p is the most commonly fitted aftermarket one.

it could be down to a vac leak the standard diverter is prone to splitting, along with the million other vac lines that are on these engines. but normally these show themselves at idle.

if you intend on keeping the car for a while have a look at getting VAGCOM 409 for cars up to around 2003 or its now called VCDS ( some versions are still called vagcom 709 ) for the newer versions. 409 can be used with a generic usb to obd2 cable off ebay but you need to configure the ports on the laptop. the license is also $99. i got the cable and license for around £60 when the £=$ was strong.
709/VCDS requires ross techs own cables which comes in around $299 however the softwares free.

both can be downloaded from rosstech.com and this is what alot of VAG specialists use as in places its better than VAG own diagnostics
