Probably not the first time it's been asked but PETROL OR DIESEL

but tbh it doesn't answer the question, in my case i am probably averaging over 17k a year at least, I need a smaller car (Can't make my mind which though today I am looking at Focus post 2008)
Any ideas, my mechanic and journos recommend the 1.6 petrol over any diesel, any idea why??

Servicing costs are similar when you factor in frequency.

Fuel prices are pretty close now.

Petrols are more environmentally friendly and mpg has crept up to near diesel levels with stop start and direct injection.

For me the torque of a diesel and fuel economy we big factors but I don't like the sound of the engines or smell of them!

well whatever I get for my A6 I guess, 2006 3.0tdi se, maybe £3500 plus, possibly when it eventually leaves the garage I'm going to bond with it but TBH I really am thinking from what I have read that VAG products are well left alone.
