What ideas do you have for a TV show? Assuming that the car is aimed at the car modding community what would you like to see?

What features would you suggest to keep it interesting and what sort of cars would you like to see?

Please note that this thread will be read by someone producing a program for a MAJOR broadcaster I won't say any more at this stage though! :D

My Ideas, invite 3 car modders in 2 categories each week and put them through 3 challenges.

Upto 150bhp Over 150bhp could be the category or the power limits could increase from episode to episode.

Challenge 1
Drag race between contestents over 1/4 mile

Challenge 2
Dyno test each of the cars and divide the power by the money spent to get a score.

Challenge 3
Each car is given to a racing driver and taken round the same track each week with comments on how the car can be improved and a review.

You could also pit the modified car against a standard one to see if it is better.

Any ideas for involving mainly styled street cars? What challenges would work for a car like this? What about a jury/audience vote for best looking car?

The car could then be given a virtual makeover with some suggestions on styling improvements doing a photochop.

would the show be like a modified Top Gear? or more like an upmarket scrapheap challenge?

are we talking about cars and their owners or building some ridiculous contraption for a nonsense challenge?

I'm guessing it's aimed at the under 35's, the format is undecided yet so whatever you think the under 35's want to see.

I'd like to see a "Modified TopGear" and I think there is a strong demand for it.

Sadly though a lot of shows involving modified cars just become a "look at the chav and all the money he's wasted on this car" fest. This will be a more serious look into our world of modified cars and will hopefully present a positive image, moving away from the boy racer association.

I like Scrapheap challenge, Pimp Your Ride and Top Gear but there is still nothing out there for real cars, built by real people?

There are some stunning classic rods out there, Awesome Beetle conversions and some genuinly interesting projects that don't fall into the modded mums cars category.

I think MrB's modded Skyline would be perfect for the show and it would be something I'd happily watch.

This is totally unrelated to the Sky TV team request enquiry I posted a while back.

that's a good idea and something I was thinking about, what I think we want to see is an overview of car culture as a whole not just a focusing on the chavs at cruises or the diehards in their garages all night long, a documentary style program about all aspects of the modifying scene,

I personally would love that and to see some projects actually making progress along side.

Sort of like Jeremy Clarksons Speed crossed with Wreck Rescue with a bit of top gear thrown in for good measure

Also the science behind modifying i.e. how and why do we do it to our pride and joys,

Something like a modified Top Gear would be quite good. It could like a show and go challenge. Owners will get scored on various areas based on a category. They will also have to post a time themselves around a designated track.

Don't forget to include plenty of scantily clad women as well!

Has anyone seen the Best Motoring DVD's from Japan?

They have a section where the car owner challenges their driver to do a faster lap on their local track in there car. The owner gets 3 tries to post a best laptime but the pro driver has to do it in one!

I saw a new one end of last year called "Ultimate Car Build Off" 16 teams in a knockout competition, two teams in a head to head heat to build a vehicle for a specific challenge given a fair budget and a running car to start with. Whoever won the challenge moved on to the next heat and so on, it worked quite well but was still a bit pants

They need to focus on the cars the young lads and lasses want to be driving. It would be really boring if it's all Saxo's and Corsas.

I like seeing cars that have had lots of money spent on them. I do think that power and performance are as important as style though so hope this would be represented.

What about doing an Old Skool section for modernised classics in the show? This would be really cool and keep people interested in some classic cars that might otherwise get ignored.

Well We have seen a lot of these shows anyways, and though yes you can pick up a few pointers from them, you really watch it with an entertainment aspect in mind. Since, i.e. in "The Ultimate Car Build Off" where they show how to convert a jet-ski in to hovercraft, or how pull up some "treasure" from under the water.

How many 35 year olds would be wanting to do that to their favorite possession?

Its all fine and dandy to watch, but not many takers in real life.

IMAO: This is what I propose:

Divide the series into 3 parts

1. Inside................. 2. Outside........................ 3. Mechanical!

1. Inside includes the Upholstery, the ICE, any accessories, including their purpose and positioning and housing or shrouds.

2. Outside may include the body-work, paintwork, any extra illumination, and after market kits of modification of bodywork metal. as in skirts and spoilers, its purpose and the effect it has on the final finish.

3. Mechanical may include engine swaps, tuning of stock engines, suspension brakes. tyres etc.

The cars selected should be used, i.e. anywhere from 1-10 yrs old, mid market and popular, and easily available, ( though upmarket vehicles can have a separate section of their own) and all modifications should be done, keeping in mind that these cars should be considered as everyday rides, and criteria should be defined, as in it should be street legal, the number of passengers it carries in its original condition and after modification, and modifications should cost a certain percentage of the value of the car.

Now each section further divided into a before/after and how-to sections, why things were done like they were and so on, so that if the viewer feels he would like to do something like that he would then be able to see how its done.

Intermittently, you could throw in some segments on how to change a spark plug or a wheel, how to change the brushes on an alternator, changing bulbs and fuses, changing engine oil and other liquids, best way to wash your car, how to repair minor bodywork damage, how to care for paintwork and upholstery and "Modification NO-NOs " safe driving tips. etc.

Each participant should be given a limited period, i.e. 2 weeks to do what they wanna do, with pictures of the car in its original state taken at the onset and some after the work has been done.

Have a winner, first runner-up, and second runner-up in each category, then another three places in an overall contest.

Then bring them back at the onset of the second season, show flash-backs of their work and the condition of these cars now, before you start the next season, again awarding them prizes for the best maintained cars.

Ah yes we can also have a category for the most appealing car to the lasses, where we get in some Playboy Bunnies, or other centerfold models to pose around and comment on the cars, just so Prince and BFF don't get bored. ;) ;) ;) And then these models would agree to go out on dates with the winners of each category..

Won't that be gr8?........;)

Please show BFF & Prince where to sign to register themselves.

And don't worry I will be joining you too lads.

;) Another Book? ;)

Putting performance parts on the car and then seeing what it does on the dyno will be interesting. I bet few parts add much if anything to the power figures.

This would be good to do, as it would help to seperate the manufacturers facts from the fiction!

I think your car should be featured T9! It would be perfect, show the kids how to do it. You have style and performance!

Also what they need are features on tuning houses and performance part makers to show what really goes into car mods. It will make things safer if people do them properly and don't cut corners. Brakes for example is the last thing people think of when tuning a car but should be one of the first.

There just isn't any programs out there about modding cars that don't fall into the MAX Power MTV PIMPING category.

If they do features on peoples cars I hope they are not all the same each week, Id like to see some nice Japanese tuned supercars, Exotic cars like Ferraris and Lambos that have been modded along with the usualy European and American muscle cars.

The key is getting cars that are really unique and special. A dyno run would be great if they could do that in the show and they could offer performance parts to the owners and see if they bag it or bin it!

How about contestants have to have a car which cost less than £999 including building (Like the PPC £999 Challenge) You can buy a car for more and sell bits to finance bits etc. Then do the PPC £999 challenge then the good bit, Teams then have to drive around Europe (Scumball style, tests etc) and somehow there is a winner, but the teams who loose or break down are allowed to barter, bodge or blag mechanicals to help them complete the european grand tour bit. pick up horny hitchhikers but are only allowed fuel cards and food no money at all so it's a case of fixing your car for free or walking home to Blighty,,, Do I get the ££££££'SSSSS for coming up with this media smash hit. Louis Theroux and Charlie Sheen could present....Winner Winner

Topgear features fast but standard cars, this programme should feature properly modified cars such as skylines, evos and scoobies etc, race them around a track, follow some ppl who are starting out on new projects, provide info on how to modify cars from basic remaps and exhaust upgrades to full on track weapons. Do features on tuning companies like Project Khan, Norris Designs etc and show how they modify cars.

For each series the presenters could be given a car and a budget to spend on the car. The best improved lap time wins, maybe? Or you could base the final score on aspects we all look for in modified cars, rather than just speed.

Would be good to follow over the course of a series rather than just one episode i think. Then a big finale at the end.

I think it would also be good each week to have a lineup of modified cars. Not really spoken about or interacted with, just there in the background for us to look at :)

Also, (getting a bit cheeky now) i am after a new career path at the moment, so if a "producer for a MAJOR broadcasting company" is reading this. Message me :D

1st bit, Good idea! ;)

2nd bit, Sounds good to me! ;)

Final bit, You shameless hussy!

Anything from small cars with bodykits and loud exhausts (boy racer kind of stuff), to nicely tuned racing skylines to modernised classics. If it isn't standard, we'll take it. There is so much you can do to modify your car, there is room for everything.

Had another idea. What about featuring companies that specialise in factory modifications (if that is the correct term) companys like alpina and brabus, I think there's one that'll supercharge your Aston V12 too.

That's a good idea Jakeymd! There are some seriously nice aftermarket specialists out there. Mansory for example!
