An understanding partner to your need for speed and high performance in your beloved chariot off choice, could save your sanity, your marriage, and your bank balance?

Do the little darlings pass you the tools you ask for when you have your head stuck underneath the bonnet and your hands are covered in oil?

Do they actually understand about the tools you are asking for and what their function actually is?

Do they miss their favorite soap opera on the tv just because you need a hand to hold up an important engine part, so that you can get that last bolt in?

These partners are worth their very weight in gold bars, and I feel they should be acknowledged! bless them all I say! :D

the al yins no too bad actually she likes to get involved in helping usually gets telt to bugger off after a while

she can already change wheels, to the amazement of the lassies she works with,
change the oil
and more or less change the brake pads

Where did you say you can get these partners from? I'll have three! lol:D My misses used to try and help but she was about as much use as tits on a fish. She couldn't tell you what a hammer looked like, so I now tell her to busy her self with things she likes doing like cooking, cleaning and ironing and stuff...

My wife used to change wheels in case of puncture, but that was long ago, my two daughters however, are adept at basic maintenance-checking oil , water, brake fluid etc, and can also jack up the car and change wheels.

Yeah like wise T9 man,

my mrs hates me doing anything mod wise to my car. ''all i keep hereing is you don't need that.'' im currently in the market 4 a supercharger and im getting so much agro....

Nope, pretty useless and would get in my way more than anything if she tried to help but at least she feigns interest and never moans about my spending. She's a diamond really tbh.

Yes granted! Handbags, haircuts for the lady! but then, how much is a bad boy take no prisoners Turbo? ICE with multi amps, 6 subs, 15 speakers? if you give them a little then they will be happy, then without them knowing, you can have a lot! straight down the middle equality man style! that's what I call it!

My wife is pretty good about it all but I don't really spend big money on tuning, I don't go further than an ECU remap and maybe some posh screenwash additive.

my wife is quite good she has helped me in the past quite a few times, like holding a light, passing a tool or pumping the brake pedal while bleeding so on.
as for spending money on my car as long as the £600 a month goes into the joint account she has no problems what i spend the rest of my money on

my fiance feigns an interest occasionally, and will come to vw shows and meets with me, but thats about as far as the good goes.

she still hasnt got over the time i spent 3k in a month on a 20year old mk2 golf, and constantly whinges about my a)spending b) never ending stream of cars/projects.

but, to her credit, she still lets me do it (not that she'd have any bloody choice in the matter!)

My girlfriend likes cars, to look at and listen to. Its purely aesthetics. A red Ferrari revving, stationary, is fantastic for example - but she doesn't like to drive quickly (or even be driven quickly). She squeals in the passenger seat if I drive quickly and starts making demands that we slow down.

Despite my various attempts to get her doing basic tasks, she can't even put screen-wash in without tipping it all over the engine bay - so I've given up there.

She does come to shows with me, but again, its only to look at stuff!

RB: sounds a very familiar story, my wife saw me looking at Gallardo's and asked why i didnt buy one of those.....? it looks nice, just ignored the blatant price shown at the bottom of the screen.
Saying this she did help change the brake pads over on the Scooby last time we were across - not sure she will do that again though after breaking a nail.

My wife helps out with cleaning the car and can do an oil change and that sort of thing. Plus she makes me think before I waste another load of money on something that will cost even more to run in the long term.

She sounds like a very wise lady ;)

Before we were married, my wife used to maintain her own car, even down to changing brake shoes and a head decoke, with guidance from her dad. In fact all four of us (Me, wife, son and daugher) are petrol heads.

It was she that suggested I get the Elan out of the shed it had been sitting in for 19 years and get it working before I was too old to drive it!

The money being spent on the car is separate from the house budget and the only stipulation she has made is that I have to build it so she is able to drive it! The last time it was working (1985) the clutch was too heavy for her to depress it :)

Daughter helped me strip a Mk3 Escort last summer.

That's some family you have there OG

My wife loves to "help out". She's not really good at anything, but she's learning. I ask her questions every time we're under the car. She loves doing oil changes with me and twisting a wrench.

I try not to get too irritated when I ask her for a tool and she just stares at me. Especially when I'm holding something that could fall and knock my brains out and I'm trying to describe the tool in detail.....*deep breath*

She can point out most cars by just their headlights. She knows what would be a good race for us when she sees it. She even knows what engine sizes mean in cubic inches and in liters.

She likes racing as much as I do. Perhaps more so. Though she does not like to drive and is always a bit nervous.

She doesn't mind spending money on the cars. This is, at least partly, because I won't spend money on the cars until after I've paid everything else first and still have 5-10x the cost of the part just sitting in the bank.

She is invaluable in my pursuit of speed. I wouldn't trade her for anything.

My missus is always quick with an intellectual contribution to my automotive projects. She can provide advice and endless helpful tips on why I should not do what I plan to do, and if I still insist on doing it, what adverse effect its gonna have on her comfort, when she is in the car.

I did try to teach her how to drive a car when she was 3rd trimester carrying my elder son, and she had become quite proficient too. And then one day, she decided to try her hand, wearing inappropriate shoes.

So her foot somehow went to the accelerator instead of the brakes and the car zoomed ahead, heading for an 18' stone-wall. and the more she tried to stop it, the faster it went since what she thought was the brake pedal, was the gas pedal.

We escaped injury because;

a) It was 2.30 am an no traffic around,
b) I reached out and swerved the wheel full right, thus angling the car towards an open field, and reached out to turn the engine off.

After that, there was a unanimous decision, albeit a wise one, that she will stick to safer endeavors like becoming an astronaut, or a trapeze artist.

Her contributions to the maintenance of the cars goes to the length of coming in after a trip and going, "There is something wrong with the car. Its driving funny. Fix it before tomorrow morning since I have to go to the mall with my friends."

She does sometimes assist me in my projects, like when i am on my back under the dash i can ask her for a tool.

The other day I asked her for a Phillips screw-driver and she disappeared for 5 mins, leaving me wondering what was taking her so long since the tool was in the tray right next to the driver-side door.

Just as I extracted myself from under the dash, I see her walking in with my portable DVD player, and she goes, "We are out of orange juice. Shall I get you a Bloody Mary instead?"

She does have an obsession about clean vehicles though, and will get the cars cleaned in my absence too, from the servants.

I wouldn't exchange her for anything in the world though. Who knows what the new missus is gonna be like.............?

;) ;) ;)

i get a real head ache from the missus when looking at mods, "why you wasting your money you only gonna make it sound s**t and look s**t" ahhh the love of a caring woman
