Your only ever gonna here problems on a Forum, not much point in discussing how your car is working fine but to break the mold: My 92 twin turbo GTO is working perfectly. Nothing is broken and all switches function, but.............the airfreshner has lost it nice smell!!!!

Any piece of mechanical engineering that is this old will have problems especially if servicing has been neglected. It goes with the territory though.

You could buy a newish clio and drive that round and live with £2000 depreciation per year or you can spend that maintaining and running a superb car like a GTO.

If the cost to repair exceeds 50% of the market value then it is time to make the hard decision and move on.

MTK what are your tips for keeping a GTO going so well?

In my case it was buy a good one which had been very well looked after by a collector, garaged it's entire life never modified except for a tastefull hand made full stainless system and BBS 18's on PZeros and according to the only owner bar me never driven in the rain. It came with 2 folders of history and original sales booklets plus copies of any car mag which featured GTO's/3000GT's.:bigsmile::bigsmile:

Sam,

The biggest problem is lack of maintenance over a period of time. These motors aren't cheap to run but if serviced regularly and looked after when they need new parts, most of them will return a good service to the owner.
The other problem is a lack of knowledge at the local garage, these motors do require specialist care and attention.
What happens on a large scale is that people try to get by with running a big car that they really can not afford but were tempted by a low initial purchase price and the fact that when parked up on a forecourt, they look stunning all polished up. These motors don't rust unless they have had an accident and it hasn't been repaired properly.
Service wise, nothing is cheap. GTO's are well capable of sitting at speeds well in excess of 150 mph all day, or at least until the next full tank.
They are heavy and demanding on the brakes which are not cheap for a decent replacement set. Tyres aren't cheap for quality ones, obviously the price varies according to wheel size.
The list goes on but if these parts were replaced with decent items when they were needed and the engine/transmission etc was serviced on time, they would be in better condition now.
It's just that people buy them, run them into the ground because they can't afford them and then sell them on, and the cycle continues.
I have seen them come into our workshop in such a bad way that if they were animals, the kindest thing to do would be to put them down.
That said, there are plenty out there which have had absolutely thousands spent on them and treated like a part of the family, these do however, demand a premium price when/if they are ever sold. There are bargains too.
You are welcome to call me if you need help, we build, service, maintain and upgrade these cars, and others for a living but i am more than happy to help people too.

i did buy a good one. it has loads of service history, and has had thousands spent on it, the last owner had it 6 months but never drove it, he just looked at it!
ive been told that it was the new battery that gave the car a shock and put it into limp mode.
the bloke brought the car with a brand new gearbox and loads more stuff, so hopefully she is a good one and i will put the new shoes on hold and spoil my car instead.

Sorry Sam but a new battery does not do anything to affect the TCU, especially put it into limp mode.
If your replacement TCU is a second hand one, please get the capacitors replaced if they are the originals, or they will leak, damage the board and you will be back to square one.
Capacitor leakage is the main cause of board failure in the first place.
I'm glad that you appear to have bought one which has been cared for, good luck with her.
They are all she's ! This is due to high maintenance costs and being temperamental. ;)

what happenes with old cars is that their parked up too long
in order to keep a machine like the gto running perfect, it needs to be driven regulary

ive been havin problems too .all front end. constantly need allignment, rack an pini leaks, psteering issues... i mean i love the car but i keep this up... want to start going into upgrades but cant

If your GTO needs to be aligned regularly, i suggest that it has not been done correctly in the first place. If the steering rack leaks then repair it or renew it.

we renewed the pwr steering pump and the rack.. still gettin moans from time to time.. its gettin annoying man.. i'll try taking it to someone

I think it is fair to say that the 3000gt is beyond the scope of a local garage. You should find a Mitsu specialist and get them to do a full service and all the checks. That way you'll cut off future problems before they happen. Hopefully.
