Car industy effect on the economy

How much of an impact does the car industry have on a countries economy?

We are all so dependent on cars and all need fuel and spare parts, if it wasn't for the invention of the car would the economy be in a better or worse state right now?

Car makers and cars themselves are tied in too much. There probably woulnd't be an economy without them.

I bet if we all stuck with our cars for 14 years the economy would nosedive.
