    A burning question:

This is all quite intriguing; from my experience dual spark plugs are quite redundant; I had a plug failure (on a gifted vehicle, NOT my negligence) not too long ago, and I was able to limp home on 3 cylinders and fix it myself. It has run fine for 5,000 miles since. Yet I should point out that...

That would be interesting to see if there's one still in working condition somewhere. Learned a lot here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_discharge_ignition

    Going organic - ?...

We know, it's a bit of cheek. So what makes 'organic' pads perform (and apparently cost) better than common graphite carbon pads? Is it a blending of materials?

    Going organic - ?...

It is if all you're concerned with is braking performance. Larger rotors increase the rotational inertia on the wheel assembly, which will affect acceleration and mileage. Not to a huge degree, but most things are trade-offs rather than true improvements.

    A burning question:

Thank you kindly for your response, honorable sir; however your input does not address my curiosity. First off, the capacitor is added, not substituted for the ignition coil. Without coils, there would be no electronic timing control, because the coil is what enables a very low voltage to be...

    A burning question:

I have a wonderment: [Danger Will Robinson! Highly electrical content ahead.] Whether one thinks they work better or not, PulStar is known for making spark plug capacitors, which concentrate and suddenly release the energy of DC current going to the plug. Most modern engines now use ignition...

    What are vented discs

Thanks to both of you for the explanation. I've barely worked on brakes (1 major job and some inspections), so I wasn't aware of the self-adjustment mechanics that gladrags described so well.

    Diagnosing a diesel

-=UPDATE=- Replaced the intake turbo hose and LIMP MODE IS GONE. Test drive was completely succesful. My wife is 100 miles away and didn't lose power once. It is a Gates hose, the biggest name in automotive hosing, tubing, and ducting, so I do not expect to see THAT problem EVER again on...

T25 vs T25... Which One Do I Choose??

Understand first that I'm working off of your stats and general operating theory. I would not try what you're considering. The engine has an 8:1 compression ratio, which a bit low for a small-displacement gasoline engine, so there should be decent crankcase pressure to work off of. If the...

    Going organic - ?...

Something new has crossed my path. I just read a couple product descriptions describing organic brake pad/shoe material. I learned a little about this but don't remember anything specific. Is organic material in any way superior to ceramic? I saw a se of organic mat'l. pads thst were TWICE...

    Are drilled discs dangerous

That would make sense. I should point out that forging or punching holes will create stress in the metal by process; drilled holes only create stress under use. It is conceivable that annealing after drilling could help the finished part to stand up to such stress, and also help explain the...

    What are vented discs

I'm wondering if auto mfg. laws are different in UK/Europe from North America on this point. The last two cars I got wheels off of there was a gap (small but visible) between the pad and rotor. 1) does that change when the master cylinder is charged? 2) Wouldn't that cause wear whenever the...

    What are vented discs

Some caliper designs, especially heavy-duty ones, have enough play to admit vented rotors, and in small cars vented ones aren't always THAT much thicker. It's important to remember that a thicker rotor will decrease petal travel (but not always improve braking performance) so always take a...

    What are vented discs

I would not go with grooved or dimpled; these features can help remove dust and increase the surface area of the rotor exposed to air to improve cooling, but also makes the rotor's mass distribution less uniform. If grit or foreign objects cling to the rotor this can produce something called...

Jump start a petrol from a diesel engine?

Well not that I think the U.K. and Europe should pay even more, but if America reduced its thirst for oil even more by having more hybrid and electric cars, more natural gas, solar turbine powerplants, and possibly in some alternate universe more nuclear electricity, North American consumption...

I frequent a parking lot where there is one space marked "Electric vehicles only". Conceivably it could become a ticketable offense, like parking in a fire lane or a handicapped spot.

Jump start a petrol from a diesel engine?

I also don't think the I.C.E. will disappear completely, nor should it. It's not a humongous change to put charging stations in at hotel parking lots and petrol stations (probably at least 15 meters/50ft. away from pumps), and as less gasoline-powered cars are mass-produced, the companies at...

Jump start a petrol from a diesel engine?

I've seen a share of charging station in bay area parking lots. it's slowly spreading. Actually a number of powerplant types were fielded around the beginning of the 20th century. Besides electric and gasoline, there was a cousin of the diesel that used the Brayton cycle to capture motive...

Jump start a petrol from a diesel engine?

Let me first respond to that by saying I have to agree with the perception that 21st century Americans are quite daft; I get more respect from foreigners than from my own fellow citizens. To add some clarity, nuclear reactor cores are shielded, not armored. Lead and concrete are dense, but...

Jump start a petrol from a diesel engine?

DOH! You started something now. [Jumps up on soapbox] Since Three-mile Island, there has been an increasing fear of nuclear energy, particularly in North America where it has been fomented and encouraged by the press. The Chernobyl catastrophe gave this fear deep roots, such that the most...

    Bugatti Veyron Engine

I dispute none of the facts. I'd just like to present an idea that emerged in industrial production; planned obsolescence. Basically, something is designed to work so well, last so long, and then become more expensive to own&repair than to replace so that the mfgr. can sell you a newer, better...

New car or refurbished old one

It has always been a characteristic that they've had - not cornering well at speed. America rarely comes out with a car that is above-average in most categories. It's this whole 'we're making Mustangs, we're not trying to turn them into Corvettes or M3s or Vipers.'

    Diagnosing a diesel

Whoa whoa; two-stroke mineral oil?! 1) I am not one for mixing products across different operating principles unless I know EXACTLY what I'm doing and why. I have access to a score of fuel additives that pass DOT basic standards. 2) I actually did a chemical cleaning of the fuel system...

Jump start a petrol from a diesel engine?

I thought Tesla was taking care of that? ... That presents another problem. Between electric cars and increased commercial and industrial automation, the demand for electricity is liable to increase. And between the electrical and economic math, 'clean' energy sources are not going to supply...

    Diagnosing a diesel

Got it. I think I will start with the turbo hose, then treat the fuel. Some of the anti-microbe additives mention clogged fuel filters and injectors, "slime films", and "sediment". (Also fuel tank corrosion. yikes!) 'Thanks dudes!' |B(8})

    Diagnosing a diesel

Well then, that corrects one myth I never knew about. It sounds to me like there is insufficient information to isolate the problem. The two existing ideas I have are 1) replace the turbo recirc hose and drive it 500 miles; 2) put a bacticide treatment in the fuel tank and drive until near...

New car or refurbished old one

One thing I would like to do is own new AND old, side by side. Two ideas: my wife always wanted a classic-era Corvette Stingray, 1968-1972. Then the 2015 was revealed. She likes both. Wouldn't it be phenomenal to have both in the same garage? Other idea: The Ford Thunderbird. The original...

New car or refurbished old one

Hard to say. I have high confidence in my driving skills so a restored classic would be loads of fun on a track. But today's new cars are indeed safer - and tamer. If you look at the difference between American playgrounds in the 1960s and today you come up against the same thing. To some of...

    Diagnosing a diesel

You know, that is something I was unaware of. I know the engine is already dreadfully sooty: Did an oil change with nice watery synthetic; all done, check the dipstick - BLACK. Could soot be the problem? Might I need to do a flush/burnoff? What I'm about is figuring out why it goes into limp...

    Love it or leave it?

I know in general about the bearings (I worked around motors and generators in the Navy). the biggest thing for me is needing a lift - I have two jackstands and a crawler but I need a new hydraulic jack. That plus DIY supplies for fluid changes isn't going to be precisely cheap. And I'll need...
