Have you ever had to pay for a repair which doesn't actually fix the problem?

Why do garages try to get away with guessing what's wrong, charging you for a new part and then charge you all over again for another go at guessing what's wrong with the car?

You take your TV or Appliance in for repair and you pretty much always get it fixed or a free second attempt at repair. Are cars so different? Are garages just on the make or is that how it goes?
