Air Filter for VW Polo 16v mk4?

I have read that its best to install a panel filter for my polo is this true? and whats the best one to get ?

depends on your driving.
if you sitting up near the redline all the time then a cold air induction kit would be best. but for more normal everyday driving a smoothed out airbox and panel filter gives you a better spread of power.

in most applications, especialy small engines, an induction CAI kit will although give a gain at the top end will lose power through the low to mid range (IIRC its something to do with air pressure at the manifold.) so only really give you power over 5000 rpm. a panel filter will give you a small gain overall but all the way through the rev range

What is a smoothed out airbox, sorry if that sounds a stupid question but i dont know loads about cars.

might not be possible on the 1.4 as the airbox is the engine cover is it not ?
the airbox that the filter sits in is normaly rough. smoothing it out allows less resistance in airflow.
