Re: Best racing driver ever

If it was 10 or 20 years ago then I'd have agreed with you. WRC cars now have 4 wheel drive and other electronics. If they all drove rear wheel drive cars then yes it's more technical. But with 4 wheel drive they've got it easy really. Drifting takes just as much skill to master as rallying. But I wouldn't say any is the most skillful as there are a few.

Re: Best racing driver ever

have you watched formula 3.
all the cars are basicaly the same and its down to driver skill.

you get much more close racing and masses of overtaking.

none of this, lets follow each other for 72 laps and only pass in the pits.

rallying is great, but its only a time trial. no 1 on 1 racing.

drag racing is dull.

touring cars is good, but thats out of the reach of normal people.

a lot of the one make racing champion ships are fantastic for thrills and spills.

Re: Best racing driver ever

well this is just my opinion but rallying is the most skillful cause

1, they race on different surfaces eg gravel, tarmac, ice/snow,
2, they race in all conditions eg rain, snow, sunshine, fog
3, there is an element of the unknown on there courses eg live stock, fallen trees, boulders and ditches
4, some of the courses they race on have sheer drops with no barriers so 1 mistake they could be dead
5, the speeds they drive in alll the above mentioned conditions/environments

so in my eyes all this makes rallying the most skillful motorsport and i cant think of another motorsport that even comes close to rallying!!!

and tbh tn i have no idea how you can say drifting takes as much skill to master i learned drifting on a go kart track the first time i ever went in the 1+ hour i was there
yes its smaller scale and have no gear changes but the basic principles are very similar!!!

No it's far from the real thing. Anyone can chuck a Go kart round the bends. I used to drift the crummy Go karts at the American Adventure theme park when I was about 14. Real drifting takes immense skill. Drifting at 100mph is real drifting. Don't get me wrong I love watching the WRC but I just don't think it's the most skillful.

What about drifting? That is pretty hard to do and it is solely judged on style, skill, speed and poise!;) All other sports are against the stopwatch! :D

I always used to say that rally drivers were the best drivers for many obvious reasons. But they did lots of races of rally drivers against formula 1 drivers in various different types of races and the formula 1 guys by in large won hands down.

I'd still like to believe it's rally drivers though

the thing about drifting is it's taking 1 single aspect of driving to a level of great skill, like drag racing but with actual skill involved Lol. I think drifting is a really skillful sport but I think rally drivers are on the whole more skillful.

I think your getting too hung up on different elements to driving - for example, im sure a very experianced off-road driver would beat a F1 driver around an off-road race, but it doesn't make him any more skilled as an overall "driver" nor does it make the sport any more skilled.

The question is... although the OP doesn't really hit the nail on the head - is, which sport requires the broadest range of skills?

My personal answer here is going to be F1... for a variety of reasons.

1. The sheer amount of physical strength needed to get a driver through an F1 race
2. The concentration required to not only 'race' but play tactics at the same time
3. These guys are adjusting car settings at ~ 200mph
4. Pit stops - I can imagine these are so easy to get very wrong
5. Sheer driving skill to even be able to focus on taking a corner at 150mph

Nursing the tyres, keeping heat in the breaks, they're LETHAL cars in the wet - the amount of skill to drive an F1 car in the wet must be immense - and of course sheer bravery to be honest.

well when I said various races, they raced offroad, and tracks etc.. and F1 came up tops most times.

the broadest range is what I meant by drifting being too specialist, it's highly skilled... in only one aspect of driving.

I'd still like to think it's Rally drivers. In all aspects really

It's not rallying. If they were using rear wheel drive cars instead of 4 wheel then I'd agree. But seeing as they use 4 wheel drive nowadays then it's not. F1 is a good choice and I agree with all the points you made MA. IMO rallying nowadays is getting a bit tame. As is F1. Nascar takes some skill to master. Mind you so does the Le Man 24 hour race.

In motocross you have higher jumps and dirt, mud and something like this under your bike what makes everything a little bit harder. At the street drifting is more skillful thats right but if you try it you will think like me. Motocross is not as easy as it looks like and it needs much skill and power.

ok then i will openly admit you do need alot of skill to drive/ride in any sort of motorsport no denying that in the slightest

but i will stick with rallying for the simple fact of the high speeds on different surfaces, and conditions they drive in (ALL conditions not like any other motorsport eg f1 where they only drive on wet or dry "tarmac")

and tbh tn yes awd has made rallying safer/easier for the driver/co driver/spectators but i will still say its the most skillful motorsport!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Buddy i've done motocross. That vid I posted was just Nicky Hayden playing around and wasn't a real race. Trust me they have big jumps. And in supermoto you still have mud and dirt. But you have to cope with it with slick tyres which is why it beats motocross hands down.

Herb it's awesome ain't it. I swear they are proper rapid too. Think about 600cc of 4 stroke power and thats about what they are. Utter madness if you ask me.

lol @ banger racing!

Tandem Drifting looks like it requires a lot of skill, especially when it's bumper to bumper.

Although Mountain Touge racing at night on open roads. I bet that would be white knuckles all the way.
