We get asked this question a lot so have a look at this thread which covers the basics. I have to admire your ambition though!:D And I hope you pull it off.

Cheap turbos can be purchased from breakers yards which are ideal for a try it and see type project.

Please note that I don't think it is worth adding a turbo to an old car with a small capacity engine. There is nothing stopping you but the money and hassle will just not be worth the power gain you get. It is better to just buy a better car for your tuning project.

Adding a turbo is a major engineering task and without a kit with full instructions and all the parts you need there is a big risk of blowing up the engine. Expect to spend 50 hours upwards on a project of this type. This is not the sort of modification you should undertake unless you are mechanically competent and know what you are doing.

It is worth looking at superchargers as these are generally much easier to install than a turbo is.

Hello and welcome to the nuthouse mate ;)

the links above will give you a brief guide.

an easier option would be to get a sr20det engine and swap

Welcome to the Site mate,

Personally whilst I admire your ambition I think that it is maybe a little too ambitious. The smaller engine would probably react well in terms of power gain but to get it to that stage you would be talking a massive price for the power. Think turbo unit, Intercooler, hoses, remap, fitting, new intake etc.

Put simply I would start with a turbo car and then start thinking of hybrid turbos and uprated turbo units rather than starting on a naturally aspirated engine.

If you do go for the naturally aspirated option and go ahead with the turbo I would firstly speak to your bank manager. After he has agreed the re-mortgage on your house then give turbo-technics (in northampton) a call and see what they would recommend. They do servicing and hybrid conversions along with superchargers and replacement units and have been about for a while so should be able to give you sound advice.

Let us know how you get on as it would be interesting to see the results and good luck whatever option you choose.

On second thoughts as I've just realised that you are from America maybe call turbonetics instead as they are US based and world famous for their work!!

Top company turbonetics - they supplied my turbos.
Nevertheless best advice IMHO is first - dont its not as simple as it sounds
and second ( if thats not put you off) its probably easier and quite possibly cheaper to find and fit a SR20det engine and then sell yours.
