Have you ever slept in your car? Any tips to pass on?

We had to once when driving to the South of France and it was not a comfortable night either! It was a busy Motoway service area and there were people milling around and chatting all night. We even had someone sit on our bonnet and chat away.

The other times is generally for a short nap on a long journey to refresh myself. I always seem to get a stiff neck and cramp though! I must be doing it wrong!

 I shouldn't have too much trouble in the A4 now. This was when we had a small Corolla!

You wouldn't be plugging your for sale thread now would you? ;)

Not a problem with the Discovery ;)

However did sleep in the back of my Firenza whilst staying overnight between the Bath scruntineering and Cirencester Park stages of the 1986 Lombard RAC rally. Wasn't the best nights sleep with a roll cage and harnesses in the way! Beer helped though.

Gretner Services in my Mazda. It was the middle of winter with snow on the ground. Worst 4 hours sleep I have ever had. I think I felt better rested when I started driving again!! lol

in the back of the alhambra with all the rear seats out, used the cushions from the caravan (which i had left at home) and got a fairly decent nights sleep! :p

Actually No I wasnt Waynne but I thank you for doing it as unbaised plugs are so much better

I slept in my old Primera all the time.
Mostly at race meetings when after racing, have had one too many. So instead of setting the tent up I'd just kip in the car.

Ford Escort with the back seats down. Job's a good 'un. Very comfortable. On the dock at Dover, 6am on our way to France some years ago now. Before children ......)

One key peice of advice... do NOT do it drunk.. Sleeping in your car after drinking is classed as being drunk in charge of a vehicle whick leads to all sorts of court related "fun".
You should be ok in private land at a race meet but public car parks after a night out etc is not advised.

I believe it is OK to be over the limit in a car if you are sober enough to hide the key somewhere where the law won't find it, as without the key you can't be in charge of a car. I would imagine an after market steering lock would help as well

Having slept in many cars I think the Volvo V70 estate is the best allrounder, Brilliant to drive and large enough to sleep in.(I wold imagine the T5 would be one of the fastest motorhomes)

just looked up the law, here is what the road traffic act has to say-

(1)(b) above to prove that at the time he is alleged to have committed the offence the circumstances were such that there was no likelihood of his driving the vehicle whilst the proportion of alcohol in his breath, blood or urine remained likely to exceed the prescribed limit.
(3)The court may, in determining whether there was such a likelihood as is mentioned in subsection (2) above, disregard any injury to him and any damage to the vehicle.

So in short, you might get away with it if they cannot fint the keys but you would have to explain how you gained access to the car without the keys and having not broken in which i think could be problematic especially if they later search the vehicle and found them. All in all i would say its probably not one to take the risk on.

To be honest I have only ever slept in cars as I have chose to be over the limit, why else would I when there is allways a comfy bed at home. It took hmrc 2 weeks to find 2 tonnes of Cocaine in a 30 foot boat I am sure you have nothing to worry about when it comes to hiding keys from the powers that be. Personally I have allways parked on priate ground when knowing I am going to do it (I don't know how the law is on this score)
