hey, ignore my display name, long story lol.

Anyway got my car today. its a putno 3 dr van. in black sat on sum 16's (soon to be replaced) looked gorjous. I was put off by the diesel but it was 1.9 so i thought why not. upon googling the cars specs i was rather dissapointed.
What can I do to tune it. I am willing to buy a turbo and if this is a good idea can you recommend any garges that will do this?.

Thanks for helping a newb

You can't just bolt on a turbo, unfortunately. You'll need different manifolds, different pistons and rods, additional cooling, a means to modulate the fuel delivery under acceleration amongst other items.

that's not to say it can't be done but you're into four figures sums of money.

oh...dear lol. So we saying an engine swap would be better or can this not be done due to it being a diesel. Im not fussed about mega performance just a 0-60 in around 9-10 seconds would be nice

What is the 0-60 of the 1.9D as it stands?

You can certainly swap engines but it's a big money job as well. You'd be better using the vehicle for a year or two so at least you get some return on your spend and then go and replace with something different.

The JTD engines are totally different to the one you have. They're not the sweetest of 4 cylinder diesels but the performance is strong.

We have a 1.9D Seat Ibiza here (non turbo) and it's not unpleasant in general. OK, it's a bit lacking in sparkle but very flexible despite this.

It's only about 70bhp and so clearly won't get near to the 406 with its remapped 192bhp but I still enjoy it's complete freedom from turbo lag and latency.

around 14 and a half seconds, if there anything to shave a couple of seconds of that 0-60 without a major overhall that would be great, I would of thought being a 1.9 it would of been around 12 seconds 0-60. a corsa 1.3D must be worse?!

Also it has something around 65 bhp (punto)

Iv looked into these plug in chip things? they plug into your ecu and effectivley re-map your car. sorry for no knowing much, help is appreciated

You can't remap a turboless diesel. A Corsa 1.3 CDTi is worth 128bhp in standard tune so will flatten your Punto I'm afraid. It's also the torque that turbocharging offers that really makes these modern diesels come alive.

Correction - the 1.7CDTi is 128bhp the 1.3 is either 75 or 90. Same comments apply WRT to torque.

wow, didnt realise they where that powerfull, will induction, full performance exhuast and new manifold help at all?

Re-read my thread - I made a mistake - the 1.7 is 128bhp 1.3 is either 75 or 90.

Torque is the king though with diesels, my 406 dishes up 329lbft

Induction kits hep a little but diesels run on excess air any way. You could try some uprated injectors and run on BP Ultimate

I'll be totally honest here. If your diesel car has no turbo you may as well scrap it if you want performance. You will get no where with it. I'd say run it for a bit and then get rid.

ok will have a look into it, cheers for the advice, jsut thought my punto is the van version so it will be a lot lighter, so this should help a bit anyway,

thanks again mate

Vans are lighter without doubt. This will help the handling. Please re-read my posts (I made a mistake in Corsa bhp figures).

Any non-turbo diesel is hard to tune at all, and will never turn in great performance. What they do offer is effortless driving (no turbo lag at all) even if they are slightly under powered.

And you might well wring 60mpg from it if you keep your motorway speeds down to 80mph ish.

Ignore the tuning boxes on ebay. You get what you pay for! I think the guys have covered the other points you raise admirably.

I can change your username if you want? Just send me a PM or post here and I'll alter it for you.

yeah, just gonna concentrate on its looks, i want to get the right sound though, wil la simple back box work on the deisel, and maybe an induction for the roar?.

please could change my name , somethign with punto in will do fine, thanks dude greatly appreciated

Thanks

Diesels all breathe deeply because there is no throttle. An induction kit will make it louder, as will a free flow exhaust. Whether it'll go faster is debatable.

You might well get a satisfying growl from it. What you won't get is the hysterical turbo scream that accompanies a high performance turbo diesel when driven briskly.

gdgd, yeah i knwo powers out the question, but a good growl would be nice, what induction should i get cause i cant find anything for my car punto, same for even back boxes

It's not my specialist area as my car is standard apart from a custom ECU remap. There's little more to be had as the map alone has given me 192bhp and over 320lbft torque, so it's a quick car by anyone's standards. It's also very, very quiet inside. The remap has made the turbo noise a little more obvious outside but that's it. The remap was done in April 2006 and I've left everything else alone apart from using BP Ultimate Diesel only and the occasional dose of Millers DPS 4 additive.

You could fit a cone filter in place of the airbox - many of these are universal, but you'll have to make minor changes to pipework and find somewhere to mount it securely. You don't want your filter intake cone finding its way into drive belts and pulleys, for example.

Getting a custom exhaust made is not as expensive as you might think. GDS exhausts in Brackley could build you a system for little more than the price of a new one from Fiat.

I will re-iterate though, that you will not gain much, if any, extra torque or performance. Make sure you really want the noise first before parting with money. If you're not certain then perhaps spend the money on audio instead and enjoy the car for different reasons.

Perhaps blow some pennies on a sound deadening kit and make the ICE installation something really special. There's still something appealing about a naturally aspirated diesel engine. They're low stressed, run forever on the smell of an oily rag. And they're dead easy to use around town. Just leave it in third anywhere between 3mph and 43 mph and treat it like an automatic with your left foot tucked under the seat.

As I said before;- NO lag or latency waiting for a turbo to spool up. I use the little 1.9D Seat in this way and it's a pleasant way to get about. It's a bit vocal on the move at higher speeds, and it feels flat out at 85mph (although it isn't) but it's more than bearable.

No, I wouldn't use it by choice for long haul runs but I have done so quite happily when I've had to make a quick trip to North Devon and Sara (wife) has been using my car.

wise words, im going for a "cruiser" look like you said, laid back car, dicrete but #!#!#!#! hot inside, installing a mini itx pc etc.. will look at that exhaust place you said and get a quote, and look at some uni air filters, your pug must shift! my dad jsut got rid of a 1.9cdti 150 ps. that did 135 mph standard! cheers for your help mate :)

Contact GDS and ask for Dudley Bacon (dreadful name, but the man is truly experienced - he makes systems and manifolds for everything from classic bikes to track saloons).

I like the Idea of a micro ATX build in the dashboard. TFT screens are getting cheaper and better by the day almost. You could probably get a touch screen and really make something special with the Punto.

And, yes, the Pug does shift very pleasantly indeed.

Followed by a big black cloud of smoke.:lol::lol:

Nope, no soot even. It has a DPF from the factory. However, can you imagine the possibilities if I could override and bypass it temporarily by means of a dashboard mounted momentary switch?

How about a fuel oil [diesel] injector in the rear part of the exhaust?

That really would make for an interesting drive. Who needs mirrors?
