Wally Have you checked for leaks at all as the dipstick would show any low oil fill level ? Is the filter tightened and no leaking around it ?
I suggest that you install a proper OP gauge as well.

yes oil level is fine no leaks at all. I've just spoke to an hdi diesel engine specialist he says the oil pick up in the sump is a common fault with the 1.6 hdi engine

More info needed so is the problem due to the pick up getting clogged with gunk and restricting oil flow or is it due to poor design ??

Older diesels can dirty up new oils quite fast so maybe they need a cleaner in the sump to clean things up before every oil change.

Did you use a good quality oil filter?
