Just to add, the 911 - 993 models had the air cooled engines and the 996/997 models have the water cooled engines. The 993 is what the purists want as it's believed to be the best engine performance with the classic air cooled soundtrack This is why you can buy a 996 and even some early 997 now for less then a 993:amazed:
It's similar with most Porsche ranges. My 944 had lots of different engine models. My 1989 turbo engine is a 952 but earlier less powerful engines had a 951 code. All the cars were 944's though :blink:
BMW do the same with the 3 series having lots of model numbers through the years but they're always known as a 3 series BMW etc
If your're considering getting one then all I can say is go for it, I did and they're grrrrreeeeeaaaaaat
