My car has died (allegedly)

Problem thus:

It is vauxhall astra 1999 automatic diesel

Trouble starting car on these cold mornings but starts eventually. After no use over the weekend it refused to start at all. Is now at garage still not starting.

Garage can't do a computer diagnostic and think problem is the pump and thus bill may be £800-£1,200, so not worth replacing...car dead!

I've done some research on web and think it may be the EGR valve
(exhaust gas recycle valve)

from a femail friend im not up on modern car many thanks mutley.

ya check the glow plugs
wont be the pump cos they cant read the ecu they have to find out why they cant read the ecu
most cases of not being about to read that i have had are a blown fuse

egr valves are very common but would not stop it starting

could be getting air into the fuel system that would stop it starting more so in the morning as well

but have had a lot of diesels in with proplems starting in the mornings and mine is one of them but think mine is the starter drawing to much power

I think the 99 Astra is a direct injection diesel so glow plugs shouldn't be necessary unless it's really really cold.

Does it turn over OK?
