Just joined Torque Cars - what a great website. One of my cars is a BMW 540i E34 which is just having a change in life from our family car to my sporting hack. It has a 5 speed auto tranny - can anybody tell me how much power it will take and is there any way of beefing it up like we do with Turbo Hydromatic T700 autos? Thanks and have a great day!

Hi there pete, good to have you along. I hope you enjoy your time on here as much as we all do!

It's pretty good you get to play with the old family car and turn it into a real car.;)

What sort of power gains are you talking about?

Hello there and welcome. Sounds like your into your cars then mate. What have you owned in the past?

Thanks for the reply Waynne. I have just sent money to my mate in Phoenix USA to buy supercharger kit from Dinan with water/alcohol injection. Dinan are claiming about 450hp judging from the info supplied. Their 540i's appear to be manual trans but in Aussie they are all autos ( or as far as I have been able to find out ). My owners manual claims a comp ratio of 10.0 to 1 which is very high for forced induction so if things turn pair shaped I may be doing an engine rebuild sooner rather than later. Anyway, I have no idea about how strong these autos really are or if they can be easily upgraded. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Wyze. Thanks for replying. Past car history isn't really that exciting unfortunately. Started 39 years ago with a 997cc mini cooper ( the one with the tiny little disc brakes ) then progressed to a 3050cc Holden Kingswood ( Aussie equivilant to a heap of #!#!#!#! ) then a Holden V8 4 door sedan ( another pile of junk ) then a very used Cortina GT mk2 (ok I guess), then marriage and a Honda Civic wagon (great little car). At this time the Civic became wife's car and I bought an old Holden ute which promptly got Chev 350, TH350, 9" diff, wheels, brakes, suspension etc. Seriously fast crappy car. I had already started racing dirt track speedway and also bought a mk1 Escort which had been very modified for roadracing. Back to street cars. Next was a new 2.6ltr Mitsubishi Magna for the boss and a new Ford Falcon 4.1ltr ute for me. I also bought a new Escort mk2 van as a delivery vehicle (great stuff). Had these for nearly 15 years, but then started again! Anew Toyota Seca Levin for boss lady and GMC 2500 1997 pickup 5.7ltr for me (I imported this used from USA and had it converted to RH drive here - good but far from great). Next was the vehicles listed peviously. I have to admit that we have owned some real junk over the years. Boring , eh! Bye for now.

So unusually for you things improved when you got married ;)

Im sure the BM will more than make up for it. The 740s have a quite a few reliability issues over here from what i've heard. mainly electrical faults but with so many toys I guess that is what you can expect.

Why not convert it to a stick shifter or do you really want to keep it auto? Auto boxes nearly always soak up lots of power and are longer gearings that sticks.
