Have recently had a turbo pressure gauge, and oil pressure gauge installed in the car. I am now having a new 3" downpipe with sports cat fitted this saturday, and wondered if I would benefit by having an Exhaust Gas Temperature gauge fitted to keep an eye on things? some help and guidance would be greatly appreciated!

It would not be a bad idea to have this available - excessive exhaust temperature can wreak havoc with turbochargers, specifically with lubrication.

It might be possible to get a unit that takes all this information from the ECU OBD2 port and presents it (all of it, not just EGT) to you in any form you wish - dash mounted gauge, dash mounted TFT display for example. This would remove the need to add wiring and the need to 'corrupt' the exhaust system to mount an other sensor.

One thing to note, be very vigiliant and let your engine idle for a minute or two after swift driving. This allows the oil circulation to continue, thus bringing down the turbochargers internal temperature. Shutting down the engine immediately is a recipe for turbo failure. You might want to monitor oil temperature as well, for this very reason.

Cheers HDi, I will start searching for some suitable gauges straight away! Will go for both the EGT and the oil temperature gauge as I can sacrifice the voltage gauge that I have to accomodate the oil temp which is clearly more important. :)

you can get OBD2 guages that display what you want

boost, oil temp, oil pressure, EGT. as long as there is a sensor for it. joy of these are you can have 4 gauges in one.
downside is ££££

Marvellous! many thanks for the help pgarner, I shall research this option as well, :)

Something I would install as well is a fuel pressure gauge, i'd say is more important than a turbo boost gauge, if you aren't running the right pressure it means you are going to be running lean...you know the rest,

(for those of you who don't know.......that's bad.....)

Cheers jarrus, I will look at this as well :)

couple of points here imo... A proper wideband afr gauge would supercede the need for a fuel pressure gauge and the thing with an egt gauge is all its really telling you is what happened 20 seconds ago lol. By then any damage might have already been done.

I've seen them before, but again not sure how they work, I guess though they are pretty useless on a diesel,

would this reading be off the lambda sensor?

mine uses the maf and lamba sensors to get the reading
but tbh i dont 100% get it myself cause at tickover and while accelerating im in the green great! but if i take my foot of the accelerator for example going down a hill in 3rd its in the red until i accelerate again is this normal???

There's no need at all for a fuel/air ratio gauge with a diesel engine. They are not constrained by the ideal stoichiometric A/F ratio (by mass) in the same way that a petrol engine is.
