air flow on 2004 x-type

I have read a lot on this site about induction and exhausts. But I need mods that will not effect my reliablity as this is my daily driver. I have stock dual intake just above the radiator into a box with a K&N flat filter staight into the throttle body. Currently stock exhaust. What should I do to improve cool air flow in and get a growl coming out. Cats are required in my state unfortunatly. I have read that my transfer case can not handle over 250hp. I am currently at 227hp.
