    British muscle cars

Re the excellent Rover V8; should it be regarded as strictly an 'American block' or to hold its own identity? Its forefather the GM BOP (Buick-Oldsmobile-Pontiac) 215cid alloy V8 proved difficult to manufacture in high quality at low cost. Many BOP blocks turned out to be porous and/or...

    British muscle cars

Daimler Majestic Major, from another era but well befits the above criteria. These things were pretty special in their day, for those 'in the know' Unlikely appearance but a peach of an engine - faster than a Mk 10 Jaguar. Info text image image image Still kicking myself for not buying a...

    Petrol?

Hey Waynne, how about I send it over to you in this beautiful 'art deco' Plume petrol tanker! One of a batch designed & built by a Queensland coachbuilder in 1934.

    Small pick-up trucks

How about we define "small" (1980s twin-cylinder Suzuki Mighty Boy)

    Petrol?

Not much use to you guys but current prices in my area are petrol @ AUD $1.35 p/l and LPG for 0.47c, you virtually halve those AUD numbers to convert into UK pence. My wife's 4.0 litre Falcon runs on LPG and, because of the price-disparity between petrol and gas, her Ford delivers the...

Minumum power to weight ratio for a daily commuting car

My minimum power commuter used to be a '55 Beetle pumping out 32.5 hp and the 0-60 was just under half a minute. But its not what you use, its how you use it - and that's the fun part. Especially on tyres 135mm wide. Because, as the old saying goes, "its more fun to drive a slow car quickly...

    Tyres.

My old Benz is on its third set of Michelin MX1 Energy (made in Thailand). They generally need replacement at about 70,000 km, which is quite reasonable I think. Not a bad compromise imo between grip, wear, and purchase price. The longest lasting tyres I've had were the low-priced 'Elite'...

    Under rated cars

Whenever I think of that particular car, this comes to mind ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1htpZerIL4&feature=related

Rental cars, abuse em or use em

Like the gent above and a couple of other posters, I can't help but respect the property of others. And speaking as an enthusiast, I dislike abusing machinery in general, and especially not trashing it, whether it belongs to me or not.

How do you judge a man

Its impossible not to form an opinion from the car itself because vehicles are such an emotional purchase. But of course this is only tells half the story, because you can't accurately judge a book by its cover. I guess the choice of car is an introduction to judgment, but the standard of...

What is your earliest memory of a car?

I can't remember ever not liking cars. But there were two in particular which I credit with cementing my interest into a lifelong obsession. It was back in the early 1960s and I would have been about 5 years old at the time, which meant that both of these cars would have been close to brand-new...

Five most disappointing cars you've driven

2008 Honda Oddessy automatic - amazed at how gutless it was. Foot to the floor yet nothing happens. 2000 Opel Astra 1.8 petrol - engine revs 'hang on' during gearchanges, ie delayed return to idle. I really, really hate that. Honda S2000 - all revs / no torque = mediocre in-gear...

    Driving hints

Wayne your advice is absolutely spot on. The stark reality for too many novice drivers is that the first-ever time they will attempt skid control is not in a controlled and safe environment, but when they're literally fighting for their life in an out of control car.

    Surprising mpg!

I'm currently averaging 21 mpg in the old Benz V8, with best / worst = 26 / 18 mpg. Wife's trusty Ford Falcon 6cyl gets similar to above but runs on LPG which hereabouts is priced at less than half of petrol, so it effectively returns the 'cost equivalent' of 45 mpg in typical urban useage...
