If you had to replace a major component like the gearbox or engine and it was only 3 or 4 years old would you say the car was unfit for purpose?

Should dealers go beyond the warranty if major problems happen just outside the warranty period?

How long would you say is reasonable for these major problems to surface and a person is able to make a claim that the car is not fit for purpose?

LM is right on the money as IMO most cars driven with mechanical sympathy will last many many long years.
It all comes down to the driver and regular services.
