VW Golf 3, Honda Civic, Audi A3 or BMW e36(318i, 320) which one is superior for tuning?

I plan on buying a new car and upgrading it bit by bit. Which one of the models above you guys think is easiest to modify like engine and body and is not very expensive. Also which engine of the car you selected is the best for tune up?

It depends what you want from the car, any VAG car with the 1.8T is a dream IMO to tune up and drive. 200bhp is easily achievable.

The Civics are nice to drive but you have to spend lots on tuning parts to make them much faster.

BMW make the drivers car but tuning parts are pretty pricey for them.
