I have just brought a nice 5dr polo...its my first car n can't wait 2 start tunning n giving it some performance up-grades, it'll prob be quicker than anything any off my mates have got around here lol , but i want to make a bit of a project out of this, and i wana be able to keep up with an Impretza some how lol, hes got the bog standard one though lol.

I wanted too know first whats the cheapist upgrades i can do.....
second does any one know if i can install a tubro/twin tubro too this engine with out having too rebuild or do any major work.
Later down the line i'm thinking about wacking in a bigger engine in there any suggestions? what will fit etc.

Anything else would be a great help, thanks for any comments:D

Whoop first post :amazed: x

hey and welcome to the site mate.

to keep up with a scooby your looking at least a 1.8t in there with work done on it.
the 1.4 will only take a turbo for very low boost so a twin turbo is out of the question without a full stonger rebuild

really a 1.4 isnt going to give you much back from tuning it.

engine wise id say go for the 1.8t from an earlier cable driven model (pre2000 i think) as trying to fit the electronic throttle is supposed to be a absoulte pain.

hey, thanks :)
1.8t polo or golf? do u think the golf engine would fit?

So you think a 1.4 isnt worth spending the money on then? so maybe my best bit is getting a more powerful engine and mess around with it abit...

The reason i asked about the turbo is on this site they reckon you can gain about 50-100% increase in bhp, and my car is 100bhp (sad i know lol ) so that would help me keep up? or wouldnt i get that out off a 1.4?
would i even be able too install a turbo onto it?

Thanks for the reply man x

its more or less the same engine in both. but i would go for the golf as the polo didnt get the 1.8t until the latest model. by that point they were all DBW (electronic throttle) if your cars got this then itll not cause a big problem and you can go for the golf 2003 25th ani and 2003-05 bora which has the slightly different turbo with 180bhp. but if not then it will require alot more work.

you can, in practice, turbo any car without major work. its more just what the engine can take for instance you might get 20-30 bhp but you might be pushing the engine to much and watch it go bang. but with lowering the compression fitting forged internals you could get a bit more but itll cost you

So maybe i should stick to a R reg golf then? isnt the golf slightly bigger though? so a golf r-reg into a polo reg should be a striaght swap? ish lol

Ah so sticking a powerfull turbo in my polo would prob blow it up? damn thats an expensive 1300pnds lol would had liked 2 drive it first lol

Cant improving the engie coolant stop it from doing that? or its it the high rev's that blow the engine?

Again thanks man x

it would be the larger volume of fuel and air trying to be compressed into the same space that would do it. decent turbo conversion would involve
forged crank
forged low compression pistons
forged conrods
exhaust changes
all other plumbing
turbo
and remapping the ecu to take it into account. slightly more than the £1300 its worth and thats all before the suspension and brakes

the golfs, i think, is bigger but there it should fit without to many problems as the R32 engine has been fitted to a Mk1 without too many problems, the 1.8t is also common orthe mk2 . it will mean that you have to fabricate mounts for it.

as well as the engine you will also need the gearbox, ECU and instrument clocks (require reprogramming to work with the immobiliser) wheel hubs, brake discs, callipers and carriers. and you will need to fabricate mounts.
speak to awesome gti to ask what else would be needed and how much it would cost. it would probably be cheaper buying a 1.8t golf in the 1st place

Yea that does sound like alot off work for not a large amount off benift :/
N Yea 4 the amount that lot would cost it prob cheap buying a avg 1.8t n spending money on that, n when its ready sell my polo...

I can 4 now prob deal with sticking 2 some cheaper upgrades till the golf would be ready, i'd prob get more out of the golf wouldnt i? than rebuilding a polo.

Thanks man x

that along with you saying its your 1st car insurance is going to be a pain as well, and yes you would need to inform the insurace that you had put in the different engine.

hold onto the polo for a few years and build up your NCB, by then the Mk5 golf will have dropped a bit and you can go out and get one of them

Thanks 4 ur help man :) i'll be back online later but i got 2 shot out for abit. N again thank you x

Hello and welcome. Nice to have you along. I'd concentrate on handling mods initially then go for the engine swap. It would be a great car, quite small light and nippy!

theres a place near my work that specialise in VAG, was looking at some sweet Mk II golfs that they had put the new R36 engine in and supercharged it. would be pretty awesome, think they're called storm engineering, located somewhere near Aldermaston.
