Performance chips

Hi,
I am new to the thread and new to BMW. I recently aquired a 2007 328i and am looking for some easy, low tech performance tips. It comes stock with 230HP, but looking for more. I came across BMW Surge Performance CHIP! and was wondering if anyone heard of it or recomended this type of chip. It is supposed to just hook into the IAT sensor and is supposed to give 35+ HP. I have also heard mixed reviews on cold air induction mods.....

Thanks
Steve

cant comment on that particular chip. but from what your saying is that i connects to the intake temp sender and not the ecu itself. DONT touch them. All it is, is a resistor that will mate the ecu think the air is colder than what it really is - yes you will get power, but maybe only 5 or 6 bhp at the expense of your engine.

Go see a reputable tuning company who will map the ecu properly to give you the power, yes this will cost you more than the £10 chip ( or what ever its going to cost you, just for info if it is the resistor these can be picked up for 2-3 pence from an electronics shop ) your looking at around £2-300.

No chip/remap/ induction kit is going to give you 35bhp on a nasp engine.

What cold air mods are you on about ?

Thanks for the feedback. I figured anythng hooking into the harness like that was not the best. Last performance chip I used actually hoooked directly into the computer.

As for Intake, don't really have anyting in mind. I've been looking around. Any suggestions? I looked a bit at Cosmo, but not much at all. Stage 1, Stage 2... All a bit of a mystery to me...

Thanks

Steve

Hi gawganch,

With the 2.8 a remap and throttle modification does make a difference, Dont ever touch a chip that interfers with the signal betweem sensors and the ecu, it does not unleash the full power of the engine and it will not gain any major power, Also faults will appear,

I do head work and some good cams out for this engines the power gains are unlimited, dependant on your budget

At first looking for some quick and inexpensive enhancements that i could do myself and then take it from there. Is the easiest a cold air intake?

Thanks
Steve

Hi Mate,

for good gains i reckon the Modded throttle valve, i do sell the mods if your intrested mate,
Also we do head floowing and cam, these would make a big difference in the torque side by spiral flowing,

The new throttle body is £300.00 but my opnion of a lary cam and flowing would make a big torque difference

I am in the US and not sure how much work your suggestion is.... I wanted to start slow and do some mods that are not too invasive. Kind of get my feet wet first, then get more serious... How big if a job is the Modded Throttle valve and what does it do to my existing warranty.

Thanks
Steve

was thinking of getting my beemer chipped its a 323 i se....
its got 170 bhp as standard but not sure what bhp would increase to after being chipped....

If you want to re-flash the ECM...

.....in OBD2 cars, then a good reputable company like Superchips or others like that are the people to talk to (i.e. google... "BMW tuning").

***I thought they stopped making the BMW 328i in about 2000 and then moved to the 330i which was rated at 230hp.
The 328i for Europe anyway, was rated at about 215hp IIRC.

Bigger TB's don't work well with these cars. The best mods for most of the six-cylinder BMW's is to fit a good set of exhaust manifolds (headers) and a good quality cat-back system along with a good CAI system from someone like K&N (look at their FIPK products).

Then once these mods are done get a re-tune from someone like the afore mentioned company or the likes of the real BMW professionals such as Schnitzer, Hartge, Birds, Dinan(USA) etc.

Don't do ECM "cheats" they will cause damage to the engine.

If that isn't enough, then the next step -providing you have the means, is to fit a larger capacity engine from the same vehicle range. But you are then getting in to specialist tuning requirements to get it to run satisfactorily.

Hi, the resistor "chips" are a waste of money, i actually bought one just to see what my car would run like with one fitted, car was a bmw 318ti and it ran like a pig.. hence went straight in bin!
the 328 was restricted by fitting a smaller inlet manifold, due to tax/ins or quite possibly because the performance wasn't too far off an M3. around 15bhp can be had by fitting a 325 inlet manifold conversion.
