2002 Jaguar X-Type
Thank you for having me Torque Cars. I am new to Jaguars (2002 X-Type 3.0) and enjoying my revival of performance automobile sterwardship. Though I work as a doctor I'm a backyard automobile diagnostician and mechanic. I am very interested in recieving information regarding my recent purchase of a 2002 Jaguar X-Type 3.0 (automatic) particularly engine performance upgrades. Thank you once again for having me, and I will do my best to contribute to this automobile forum.

hey and welcome to the site doc.

1st question - petrol or diesel ? diesel is easier to tune as it forced induction where as the 3ltr petrol although its a biggish engine nasp engines are harder to tune ie £500 remap on the diesel will give around 40bhp gain and possibly 60-70 ftlb torque. where as the same remap (abet it will be cheaper ) will only give aroud 12-15bhp and maybe 20tlb torque.

better breathing wouldbe good to start on both, more open air intakes and free flowing exhausts - petrol : manifold, sports cat, catback. diesel : maniold, downpipe, decat ( no need for the cat as emmisions arent checked on diesels only or smoke ) and cat back.

Thank you pgarner. I have the petrol 3.0 X-Type. Yes, there are intake and exhaust mods available. The limiting factor however is Jaguar detuned the ECU on American sold X-Types. Top speed is limited to 120 mph versus no speed limiter for Euro (146 mph), etc. X-Types. There are American performance tuners who command $900 + to reprogram the ECU. I am considering wether to purchase a ECU reprogram myself, but not understanding what to do with it. Thank you again.

the reprogram will be a relash this adjusts the fuelling map. not something an amateur should be attempting.
the tuners spend hundreds of hours fine tuning these maps to make sure they will not damage the car.
the map itself if decent will give you a nice power and torque gain - see 1st post - and should remove the limiter.

do you know why they limited the american cars?

Thank you. I'll leave the tuning to a professional. I believe the cars are speed limited due to the belief that too much speed kills LOL. Most Euro cars sold in U.S. are speed limited to 155 mph.

No offence taken and thank you for welcoming me aboard TC. Yep, I'm a late 40'er...a very immature "late 40'er".

Amazing torque can be had by the turbo-diesel? The 3.0 with 209 lb/ft feels adequate, however as you may agree, we love torque! "Volo" claims to have a chip germane to the x-type 3.0 that plugs into OBD2 port. I shot them a message to see if they can post certified test data. Have a nice weekend.

On the X-Type 3.0, do you feel that an exhaust shop can simply weld on high flow cats, pipes, and mufflers (with stock placement of O2 sensors) without disturbing check engine light issues?

thought there was a 3 ltr diesel but can only find the 2.7
a remap alone takes it to 240bhp and 365ftlb

the petrol remaps show 260bhp and 245ftlb

start looking towards BMW and Audi there 3.0 diesels remapped your over 400tlb

a remap is normally done through the obd port and uploaded directly to the ecu.

should be able to without a problem, depends on how senstive the ECU is regards the post cat sensor. but these can be sorted out without too much trouble.

and the 155 isnt just to the USA its an agreement to try and keep the roads safe - think more germany's autobahn where its unlimited

Hello there bfsgross and a warm welcome to TorqueCars, good to have you along.

If you are after a big power gain what about fitting a supercharger to the car? I'm sure the engine has a lot more to give.

Shoot guys, I'm sorry for not responding in the past few months. Work kept me busy. Thank you very much for the hellos and support. I know a few things or two about cars and performance tuning theories, please let me help if yas need some help. On another note, after one month of owning her, the engine on my 2002 Jag X-Type 3.0 blew (possibly from lack of maintenance by previous owner). My mechanic swapped in an 05 3.0 w/48k, bolted on a pair of 1999 Ford Taurus 3.0 DOHC exhaust manifolds to 2 1/4 pipe into a single Dodge truck V8 cat. (dual 2" inlets, single 2 1/2" outlet), 2 1/2" pipe splits above rear axle into a pair of Dynomax Super-Turbos mufflers. The sound deadening material was removed in the air box to better vacilitate incoming air flow, a K&N airfilter was added. The intake plenum is being sent out for porting. At the present the engine is more responsive and reaches cruise and above with more vigor.
I would love to bring her to an AWD dyno for an ECU remap. Any performance tuning info. for the Jag X-Type 3.0 is very much appreciated. My goal is to reach a normally aspirated 300 h.p.

Are you going to get the rest of the engine blueprinted whilst the head is off? This will lift the RPM and make it a little easier to hit your target.

I had the new engine dropped in after bolting up the Ford Taurus 3.0 DOHC exhaust manifolds. The heads were not removed. Due to time and money I chose not to get into the engine save port the intake plenum. Perhaps port the intake manifold down the road too. I figure a full exhaust and intake mod with an ECU remap might do the tricK (230 h.p. + 70 h.p. ? Have you heard of these steps allowing 300 h.p. for X-Type 3.0 owners? Thank you for your interest.

A 70 hp gain seems a bit optimisitic to me for some head work. Perhaps if you added a fast road cam as well it would get closer to your target.

Re: 70 h.p gain

Hi Waynne, you're probably right about a 70 h.p. gain without head work. BonSpeed was able to achieve a 33 h.p. gain (260 h.p. vs 227 stock h.p.) with: leaving the stock manifolds and cats alone, switching to 2 1/2" pipes to Mina mufflers, and an ECU remap. I unclogged the major restriction such as: replacing stock exhaust manifolds with much better flowing 1999 Ford Taurus 3.0 DOHC manifolds, dumping into a large single free flowing cat (Dodge truck V-8), single 2 1/2" pipe to Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers, modified the stock air box and added K&N filter. I am having the upper intake plenum ported and want to perform an ECU remap while on an AWD dyno. At least 50 h.p. could be achieved (275 h.p.)? As it stands now the engine is gulping and spitting out much more air. She comes off the line noticeably more spirited and reaches cruise speed quicker. When I punch it while cruising at 70 mph, she immediately kicks down and gets to 100 mph pretty darn fast. Hard to tell what's beyond 100 mph due to major fear of a major speeding ticket. In other words, I let off the gas as soon as 100 mph is reached. One of these days?

Hey, hey, hey...a 50 h.p. NOS Cheater system?

2002-2004 fuel rails have a schrader valve to tap some fuel to mix with NO2. Though I swapped in an 05 engine, I saved the 02's lower intake manifold (with fuel rail and schrader valve just in case....

Do I need the fuel rail to supply fuel to the 50 h.p. NOS system? I can fog it into the sound attenuater bulb that communicates with the stock air box just before the throttle body? I can check with Karl Wolf, an X-Type expert and owner. He's porting my upper intake plenum.

You're kind of sounding like a crazy son of a @#$% Waynne? LOL!!!
