gearbox suggestions peeps

well on here to see what is possible and impossible to do with my new 96 polo 1.4 8v and have a giggle of course but serious gearbox is shot after day 1 of owing the car but got a scrappy that has a good selection of gearboxs/engines from golfs polos 1.0 - 1.8 ready to be ripped out any suggestions? would gearbox from say 96 1.0l polo go on my 1.4 help it to get that close ratio drive? or would it need special work. any feed back is many thanks ryan

Dont go down and engine size if you got a 1.4
The gear ratio in the 1.0L gearbox will be suited to the power of the 1.0L engine.
Either get another 1.4L 8v gearbox or maybe get a 1.6L gearbox

they might fit but the ratios would be out so you might find, for a drastic example that 70mph is 5000 rpm in 5th, however acceleration will be better. the 1.0 box will also be weaker

Talking about gear box's mine broke on me today ¬_¬.
Is there anywhere I could find out info of what i need to do to get it off ?
Or would a hayes book be the best bet

haynnes would be a good start but they will make it look easy.

take covers off front wheels/ alloys
find correct size for the driveshaft bolt and loosen (think it might be around 30-32mm)
jack up and supprt on axle stands
remove wheels
remove bolt and driveshaft
put jack under gearbox and support it
unboltthe gearbox

thats it in short
