It's probably due to the mixture of fuel and air. Or it could be a flamer kit of some sort.

Running on a fast road cam with long duration can sometime cause this. A backfire is not a beneficial thing to have going on. Heavily turboe'd applications will often shoot a flame under load but if you do this on a road car with a cat you are asking for trouble.

It depends on the timing, so spark and valve timing are involved.
