i have a vectr 1.8 ecotech and it wont rev over 4500rpm. had it on iagnostic and come back with misfire on cylinder 1. tried a new coil pack but to no avail. was wondering if maybe it could be the crank sensor or if anyone has any ideas. wouldbe really useful as im not very clued up on vauxhall engines

Remove the plug and examine it for damage/soot and report back.

Also, get a compression test done. Have you tried new leads?

Coil packs always get the blame, but as said above, check the things you can check for free, and I always find it best to start replacing stuff with the simplest and least expensive items first, especially if you are unsure as to the cause.

Did the diagnostic show any error codes, other than the misfire?

Unfortunately Vauxhalls can be like this. They seem to put up very vague fault codes. This allows dealers to swap out £100's worth of bits until the problem is resolved by trial and error. And all at the customer's expense.

I know what you're saying there, my old car showed no codes, but wouldn't even start.

I would have expected at least something to show on the diagnostic, like crank position sensor or something. Odd.

This is why I'm not fond of Vauxhalls in general. My father drives about in a simple 1.6 8 valve Astra (2003 ish) and it cost him more to run that than it costs me to run my aging 528i.

His car is always developing faults and is constantly in and out of the indy Vauxhall specialist local to him.

Mine isn't.

thats because you have a BMW... would be pointless to take it to a vauxhall specialist....

sorry, taxi for one....

Yeah right  Quite frankly I wouldn't trust his 'specialist' to service a screwdriver correctly. Their prices are outrageous - he's forked out over £1400 in the last 12 months alone ! !

There's a bit of a myth about BMW running costs as well which needs dismantling.

Yeah I know, the running costs aren't as much as people think but I also think there aren't as reliable as people think, I'm not say they are going to go wrong all the time definately not but I do know over the E46's life time there have been quite a lot of teething problems. and the diesel have had there fair share of difficulties like intake manifold swirl flaps ending up in the cylinders. I've driven an E46 330d quite recently (they later model one with 204 bhp) and after all the problems would I buy one?

ABSOLUTELY YES!!!! Do buy a BMW to drive not to worry about servicing costs, why do you think I have a 306 over a Golf? Because its great fun!!!

I'm not saying they aren't reliable at all, just not bullet proof, the petrol engines are though.

That was part of the rationale to be honest, hence me going for a petrol one. I'd certainly have preferred a 530d but they are quite a lot more costly to buy and 2nd user diesels which are out of dealer warranty are often not maintained properly, hence my reticence.

Mine has the M52TUB engine which is a good compromise between performance and economy. It does need a few revs to give it's best - you're not gonna get off on the massive midrange pull of a torquey diesel unit. It's silky smooth being a straight six unit and this total absence of vibration probably contributes to the overall long life of all components, not just the powertrain itself.

Back to the topic at hand though, what are we going to do about our man's rev shy Vectra?

diagnostic brought no codes apart from misfire cylinder 1 have had new coil pack on but didnt make a difference. hopefuly crank sensor sorts the problem

have replacwed the crnk sensor and the problem still prsists. have done an oil change engine flush and fitted new oil filter. as well as a new air filter new spark plugs engine coolant temp sensor. still wont rev over 4500rpm. iswondering if maybe the fuel filter is chocked too. as splutters thouhoput the driving range. checked throttle bodies and relevant hoses for leaks and none found to date. any help would be gratefully accepted cheers for all the eplies so far.

All the while the ECU is showing a fault code like that, the car will be running in 'safe' mode, which is why it won't rev over 4,500rpm.

Try unplugging the cam sensor and spraying with WD40, as this is a common problem causing the same symptoms.

Can you tell me the error code that you are getting, and is the engine warning light on, on the dash? I would guess it is.

so far the car has had a new coil pack two new sets of plugs new crank sensor new cam sensor new temp sensor oil change and filter fuel filter. new type of fuel used. higher grade. engine flush. no engine light on and service light comes on every now and then. no faults are showing when plugged into diagnostic. have a list of the old fault codes which follow.
