Hello everybody. 1989 Toyota Supra N/A

i know in the states things are cheaper but $1k for a turbo kit sounds way to cheap. i would be looking at the turbo alone costing more than that. did it include internal upgrades as well ?

It's the whole kit. The intercooler. All the piping. Everything. The brand is Ap 1 Ap 2.

And no. There are no 3.0 turbo engines here.

sounds like a cheap eastern knock off with a standard ebay cooler some pipe work at that price.

if your wanting to turbo it you will need to lower the compression as well so remember and budget for this. id say look towards around $4k to do the job yourself then you need to get it mapped

Hello and welcome, nice to meet you.

We get asked this question a lot so have a look at this thread which covers the basics of turboing a car.

I'm pretty sure it would be easier to just swap in the TT Supra engine than try to turbo a NASP one.

I have to admire your ambition though!:D

Cheap turbos can be purchased from breakers yards which are ideal for a try it and see type project.

Adding a turbo is a major engineering task and without a kit with full instructions and all the parts you need there is a big risk of blowing up the engine. Expect to spend 50 hours upwards on a project of this type. This is not the sort of modification unless you are mechanically competent.

There are no Toyota Supra engines around where I live. So me putting a turbo kit in a NASP engine is as close as I'm getting. :p Besides. All I wanted is a starter turbo kit with EVERYTHING to turbo the car.

Not many places offer turbo 'kits'. Not in Europe anyway. You will need to make substantial mods to the engine's internals to loewr the compression.

Different pistons and/or connecting rods. Personally I'd do both and lose the geometric compression in two places rather than just rods or just pistons which can really load up the side forces on the cylinder bores. It's very possible you'll need different camshafts as well to make the best of the installation. Cooling is worth attention. An oil/water heater exchanger (if not standard) is a good idea. Some turbo engines have little oil jets in the crankcase which squirt oil onto the bottom of the pistons to improve cooling. Sodium filled exhaust valves help to end heat dissipation as well. An intercooler is, in my opinion, also an essential with ANY turbocharged car.

Pipework, manifolds and exhaust system will need to be changed.

You'll need an ECU that can be coded to operate and manage the fuelling WRT the turbocharger(s)'s input of extra oxygen.

Let's not dismiss either the running gear, suspension, brakes and tyres.

Not a cheap option in my opinion, BUT, it will be a very special and totally unique car afterwards.

Alternatively, how about a Nissan 300ZX twin turbo?

Your so basically saying that I can't put a turbo kit in the car?

I'm not saying that you can't modify the car so that its air delivery is by means of forced (supercharged) induction.

But there is no such thing as just 'adding' a turbo. Supercharged engines are significantly different to naturally aspirated engines.

I am not aware of a 'turbo kit' for any car.

You previously used the term 'starter turbo kit'.

It's a nice idea in principle; the reality is that supercharging an engine requires a lot of work.

I reckon upwards of $15,000 to make a decent job of it.

Take lots of pics. I'll be keen to see how you get on with this.

If you are serious then don't forget to get the stronger internal engine parts, Pistons/crank etc...

I would take a TON of pictures. :D

Oh. Yesterday, I pulled the car out of our shed. Drove it up and up and down our road. Its sounds so healthy and very strong. I replaced: The valve gaskets, cleaned alot of carbon out of the intake manifold, new spark plug(which the old ones were very worn, blackened), a new intake manifold gasket because it was cracked and probably sucking air, and a new starter.

But I wont forget. :)
