On older high mileage engines do we stick with the "book grade recomendation" or does it make sense to get a slightly more viscous oil?

If the engine is in good shape and not using too much oil then no need to go to a thicker oil. If the engine has a heavy thirst for oil then a thicker oil can used to try and slow down usage.
