Is it illegal to go through a light on amber?

From what I know this is only true if it hasn't got an island in the middle. If it has, the the driver can go on a flashing amber light. I'd wait personally plus pedestrians have right of way on the road too. Works the same with zebra crossings, if they are crossing from your side to the other...

Which is faster RWD or 4x4?

I know a fair few FWD cars running in the 13 second area, but if you can keep the power up, a 4wd car will win. It will always have more grip than a RWD car but the problem is having a car that has the power to overcome losses. Dave

    Hiya guys and dolls.....

I can never remember if thats a Mk2 or 3. Ahh well, i'd keep her looking subtle. Nothing too lary and stick a big engine in. I'm sure that model came with a 2 lt, that'd be a good laugh. Maybe turbo her. But then I'm into sleeper cars more than bodykit type cars so thats just me. Look good...

    Air Conditioning

To be honest, running any electric device is worse for environment. More strain on alternator/compressor so more power. Changing to an electric fan, not mechanical, unlocks 4 horses on some cars. Thats just cos electric can run when needed, not all the time. Dave

    Vehicle lighting

Actually, I only have only have 2 spots. Either side of the grill. Not a standard pattern I admit but works well. When I get her onthe road. And I agree, the roads in yorkshire are so fun. Beautiful and very fun.. Dave

    Vehicle lighting

In yorkshire i've been in really bad fog about 5-6t times a year, and I mean really bad fog. Once I drove with the door open and kept an eye on the white lines in the middle of the road. Couldnt even see the road out the front. Thats why I wouldn't mind them. Near the moors and all so probably...

    Skid control

Yeah, my mini will cock a leg when you ride her hard... Cheers for clearing it up, I know what it is, I just never heard the term before. I wouldn't mind finding out what i'd do, but like I said, only been in that situ once so in the future, who knows... Dave

    Vehicle lighting

The spots are on a different circuit.Gonna have a floor mounted dimmer switch plus a kill switch on dash. Just for windy roads round yorkshire when you need more lighting. They are mounted in my grill so they will be legal on last 2 points. What about fogs? They are lower than bumper aint they...

    Skid control

 did you have to pick up on that. Of course, there is the saying that according to drivers, everyone is above average as no one will admit they are bad. But if you look at average John Doe, i'm not sure he would always know what to do in a skid. I find I know generally what to do, although...

How would you define a supercar?

I've put the Veyron in a class with the Maclaren F1. Both were made at a loss as an engineering exercise and went like the brown stuff off a shovel. Dave

    Skid control

I have to say I reckon I have an above average chance of recovering from a skid. I dunno if it's just the term though but I haven't a clue what countersteering is. When you say skid I guess your talking about oversteer skids. Understeer skids used to be an every day occurance. I've lost the...

    Fantasy Drive

    Vehicle lighting

For a £3 bulb(i'm a cheapskate) why not change them straight away, I always do. As for modifications, don't care about my corsa, but my mini i'm planning to modify. Have some decent bulbs in normal headlamps, gonna get some 100W in my spots(semi legal, ahem) and brake, indicator, reverse etc...

    Engine Swaps

http://www.geocities.com/jharkola/Viku2.html I know I go on about mini's, but I love them. You think 2 engines in a 306 is mad, there are a fair few people who have twin engined mini's. My fave one is someone who put twin Hayabusa 1400 engines in a mini. Think they were 1400 anyway. 240hp...

Do computer games affect driving standards/attitudes?

Opposite lock is obvious i'd say, whoever heard of someone turning out of the slide? On front wheel cars, say you managed to hand the back end out, should you keep the foot planted? I've had the back end out once and I dunno how I corrected it(natural talent I hear you cry....)but pretty sure I...

Do computer games affect driving standards/attitudes?

The game can never match the thrill of driving fast on roads, but with the law the way it is, if you have a decent car you'll struggle to have fun legally. Thats why go karts(or mini's) are the way forward in my opinion. a 60mph road in a mini is the dogs bullocks... Dave

How much does it cost to fill your cars Tank?

Bout £45 in the corsa. And will be £37 in the mini. 7.5 gallon tank... So thats a range of only 300 miles :-S Know one guy who had a tarted engine, and got 28 miles to the tank. Glad I don't own that. My mate has just bought a 540i beemer, and he's averaging 20 mpg, i'm impressed, better...

What was the first time you drove a car?

My dad has let me steer before and it was before the age of 8, dunno when. But all I know is that my mum let me drive her 1.8 Triumph Acclaim by myself when I was 8 or 9. By myself with her in the passenger seat, wooooo. I kangaroo'd first time, but second time I hit about 20 miles an hour down...

Pulling out and right on busy roads.

Depends how fit she is  I usually let one car go, although I only slow down, if they aren't in gear i'll probs go past anyway. As for turning, I usually wait for a gap, unless the junction is a nightmare then I slowly edge out until someone lets me go, and if I block traffic it...

Where do you keep your foot?

I keep my right foot planted firmly to the floor on the accelerator :amazed: Depends what i'm doing. Got a tiny engine so usually pushing accelerator all the time and my left foot on the floor next to clutch. I'm gonna make my clutch stiffer on the mini so I can rest my foot on there without...

    Engine Swaps

An engine swap is actually in the pipeline for me. I can't afford to tune the A series so I'm gonna wack a K series 1.8 VVC in her, hopefully use the PG1 'box if I can get it to fit. Get it out of a derv then I not only have the power but the gear ratio's too. One guy said he's getting between...

    Cornering discussion.

One thing about ABS too, is that it isn't actually the most efficient way of braking. You can outbrake an ABS system by braking just on the limit of slipping, the only thing is, how many drivers can do that in an emergency, most slam on and hope for the best. As for why we struggle with snow, I...

    Hey

Yeah, mini's are the best. I know many people who sell then regret it, guess i'll learn from their mistakes. Only down side to mini's are they have an old engine and it just is too heavy, not powerful enough, too expensive to tune and only has 4 gears. Thats why I'd like to do the K series. And...

How would you define a MUSCLE CAR?

Hemispherical combustion chambers, from what i've been told, is the ideal shape for a combustion chamber. Better than the dishes in most engines, but it makes the head large and heavy and, seeing as the diameter of the spere has to be the same as the diameter of the cylinder, you'd need big...

    Awheel Question

Difficult one. Bigger rims in general look better(IMHO not on minis) and house bigger brakes. However, lower profile tyres transmit more road noise, they are heavier unsprung weight so the car handles worse, larger moment of inertia so can affect acceleration and will generally be wider, which...

    Cornering discussion.

The whole country grinds to a halt when it snows too. Heading to 6th form when I was younger with L stickers on with my Dad in the car. Heavy snow and the roads hadn't been gritted so the conditions were really shocking. I was in my parents trusty old Fester (the 1.25 Zetec engine, not zetec...

How do you change a wheel?

Dangerous to undo nuts while jacked up. Handbrake on for from wheels, pref chock front when changing back. Don't forget level ground. Undo all nuts, maybe 2 turns each. Jack up car. Finish undoing nuts and remove wheel. Put wheel under car sill, so if jack slips, brakes not damaged. Put new...
