The Suzuki Celerio has been offered with a limited but efficient range of engines, tailored to its positioning as a practical and economical city car. Here, we'll break down the engine options by generation, including their respective engine codes, displacement (cc), and power output (hp) figures.

First Generation (2008-2014)

The first generation Celerio, also known in some markets as the Alto or A-Star, primarily focused on compact and efficient engine options suitable for its size and target market.

  • K10B: 998cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine, producing around 67 hp. This engine was known for its balance of efficiency and performance within the compact car segment.

Second Generation (2014-Present)

The second generation Celerio continued with Suzuki's approach of offering efficient and reliable engines, with a focus on fuel economy and lowering emissions.

  • K10B: 998cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine, producing around 67 hp. This engine was carried over from the first generation, maintaining its reputation for reliability and fuel efficiency.
  • K10C (Dualjet): 998cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine with dual injection system, producing around 68 hp. The Dualjet technology improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions compared to the standard K10B engine.

Handling/Suspension upgrades

Many Celerio owners uprate the handling of their cars with modified suspension kits as a priority, this will certainly increase your enjoyment of the car.

Good suspension tweaks that substantially benefit handling for the Celerio include a couple of degrees negative camber and 1-1.5 degrees of toe in or out on the front wheels. Toe in for stability, or Toe out to improve cornering. It would also pay to improve the brakes, by adding larger discs and or higher friction pads..

Drop the car optimally somewhere in the region of 26mm - 36 mm and fit uprated stiffer dampers, bigger drops will need other modifications in most instances.

When it comes to upgrading the suspension on the Suzuki Celerio, the options are somewhat limited compared to more performance-oriented vehicles.

  2. KYB Shock Absorbers - KYB is a well-known manufacturer of OEM and aftermarket shock absorbers. Upgrading the Celerio with KYB shocks can enhance ride comfort and handling, especially if the original shocks are worn out.
  3. Bilstein B6 Performance Shock Absorbers - While more commonly associated with performance cars, Bilstein does offer high-performance shock absorbers that can fit a wide range of vehicles. For the Celerio, these shocks can provide improved stability and handling over rough surfaces.

Celerio make good sleepers if you debadge them and fit the most powerful engine upgrades and handling upgrades you can !

Smaller engines do not provide much of a return in terms of power so start with a bigger engine. Engine swaps are a good option if you have a small engine size.

Best Engine Mods for your car

  1. Engine Tunes - engine tuning/remapping provides the most advantage in terms of cost savings,  aftermarket ECUs, and piggyback ECUs are all alternatives.
  2. Fast road cams are one of the most significant mechanical changes, but they must be installed by someone who knows what they're doing and they are not always easy to source but you might find a local firm to regrind a stock camshaft.
  3. Intake and Exhaust - Note that on their own these mods will NOT ADD POWER in most cases, but they can help enhance power after other mods by removing the restriction.
  4. Upgrades to turbochargers and superchargers - forced induction is the most efficient approach to increase air supply, allowing you to burn more fuel and make more power. It is one of the most costly upgrades but provides the best gains.
  5. Head work - The goals of porting and flowing the head are to get air flowing into the engine while removing flow restrictions and turbulence.

Typical stage 1 mods often include: Sports exhaust, Lighter flywheel, Suspension upgrade (drop 30-40mm), Panel air filter, Alloy wheels, Remap.

Typical stage 2 mods often include: Fast road cam, Power/Sport clutch, fuel pump upgrades, high flow fuel injector, Ported and polished head.

Typical stage 3 mods often include: Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Competition cam, Engine balancing, Sports gearbox.

You should keep as much low end torque as you can and aim to achieve a long power band rather than a narrow top end power hike.

Engine Tune Options.

Remapping, also known as ECU tuning, is a popular method for enhancing a vehicle's performance by optimizing the software within the Engine Control Unit (ECU).

This process adjusts various parameters such as fuel delivery, ignition timing, and air-to-fuel ratio to improve the engine's efficiency and power output.

For naturally aspirated (NASP) engines, like those found in the Suzuki Celerio, the gains from remapping can be more modest compared to turbocharged engines due to the inherent limitations in airflow and combustion efficiency.

However, even with these constraints, a professional remap can still unlock additional performance.

Typically, remapping a NASP engine can yield an improvement of around 10% in power output. This increase is significant considering it's achieved without any mechanical modifications to the engine.

The 10% gain is not just a boost in peak power; drivers can also experience improvements in throttle response and drivability, making the car feel more responsive and engaging to drive.

It's important to note that the exact gains from remapping can vary depending on the engine's condition, the quality of the remap, and the specific characteristics of the engine being tuned.

For engines like the K10B and K10C in the Suzuki Celerio, which are designed for efficiency and reliability, a 10% increase in power can make a noticeable difference in performance, particularly in urban driving conditions where responsiveness and acceleration from low speeds are valued.

Aftermarket ECU Upgrade

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) serves as the nerve center of your car, managing crucial functions such as fuel injection and ignition timing. For the Suzuki Celerio, upgrading to an aftermarket ECU like the ME221 can dramatically transform the car's performance.

In this article we shall give your a good starting base to the best performance parts for your car, but we'd encourage you to spend some time on the site looking into the details of each type of performance modification.

Fast road cams offer one of the biggest power gains for your money as far as a bolt on tuning upgrades goes on a NA (naturally aspirated) engine.

The intake and exhaust flow play a large part in your cars power band, but be careful here, getting this wrong can upset the idle and make the car difficult to drive in traffic. You'd need to follow a camshaft upgrade with other mods and finish with a reflashed ECU to fully realise your gains.

Don't forget to look at the fuelling when you are increasing the power - it makes the car more thirsty.

If you find you experience flat spots and power surges after your tuning parts you should check the fuelling and try a higher octane fuel as well. To get sufficient fuel you may need to improve the injectors on your engine.

A fuel pump will only deliver a finite amount of fuel, so you may need to uprate this if your injectors are demanding more fuel.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

The Role of Airflow Velocity and Throttle Body Sizing

Achieving the right velocity of airflow is essential for enhancing engine efficiency and power. It's important to match throttle body upgrades with the engine's capacity to utilize the increased airflow effectively.

A common misconception is that bigger is always better; however, overly large bore sizes can detrimentally affect airflow velocity, leading to reduced engine performance.

The goal is to find a balance that provides a smooth and rapid air intake without overwhelming the engine's ability to process it.

Recommendations for Intake Upgrades

For the Suzuki Celerio, adding an induction kit can seem like an attractive option for boosting performance.

Yet, it's crucial to recognize that induction kits mainly offer benefits when the original air intake system is a bottleneck, or the engine has been significantly modified to require a much higher air volume.

In most cases for compact engines like those in the Celerio, the air intake is not severely restricted, and the addition of an induction kit might not yield the expected low-end power gain.

Instead, focusing on a high-performance panel air filter, particularly those made from cotton, is advisable. Brands like K&N, Pipercross, and Green Cotton offer filters that improve airflow and filtration without the drawbacks of a complete induction kit. These filters fit into the existing airbox, maintaining a balance between protection and performance.

Exhaust System Considerations

As for the exhaust, the principle of balancing flow is equally important. A sports exhaust system can significantly improve the expulsion of gases from the engine, aiding in overall efficiency and power output.

However, caution must be exercised when selecting the exhaust pipe's diameter. An overly large bore, such as those exceeding 2.5 inches, can lead to a decrease in flow rate, negatively impacting the engine's power and torque due to the loss of necessary backpressure.

For the Celerio, a more moderate upgrade that optimizes gas flow without exceeding the engine's requirements is recommended. Brands like MagnaFlow, Borla, and Remus offer systems designed to enhance performance while maintaining the right balance of flow and backpressure, suitable for the Celerio's engine size.

Getting the head ported and polished will further help more air into each cylinder. This is definitely a job for a professional with a flow bench.

When you tune up your Celerio you will usally see that the standard clutch starts to fail so get anĀ uprated clutch. The best mods we would do for your Celerio are a tune/remap especially on a turbo, a fast road camshaft and sports exhaust, with a good air intake.

NA (naturally aspirated) engines do not achieve big power gains if you tune/remap them, unless you have done extensive modifications. With turbocharged engines this is another story. A tuned/remapped turbo will give massive power gains and fully release the potential power of the engine.

We've also come across some owners experimenting with twincharged conversions and making some impressively high power gains.

Adding forced induction will see impressive power gains but this is usually too expensive to be cost effective. It is generally simpler to bolt on a supercharger than it is to fit a working turbo. Turbos give boost in increasing proportion to th engine speed and this can make mapping difficult.

Superchargers, however will give a boost which is directly proportional to engine speed so is simpler. Decreasing the engines compression ratio will allow you to add forced induction, water injection may also help prevent detonation.

Alloy wheel upgrades.

As alloy wheels are lighter they improve performance and they can help to cool the brake disks. Get a good track legal slick tire to improve your handling and help improve traction on your Celerio. Please note although they can look cool on the Celerio large alloy wheels will actually decrease your performance. The larger you go the lower your acceleration will be - this to the change in your effective final drive ratio.

For this reason we would advise sticking to a maximum wheel size of 16 inches, although we know some of our members have gone larger than this with no problems.
