Tuning the Infiniti G37 Coupe and best performance parts.

"Cheers for reading this Infiniti G37 tuning guide."

We were emailed and asked questions for more information on tuning and building a modified G37 and particularly which turbo upgrades work best, so we've created this web page which covers our go to parts for this engine and what we feel are the best value parts you can do.

The G37 is a good project car to execute. The key to G37 tuning is choosing the right mods you can waste loads of money if you do it wrong.

Handling/Suspension upgrades

Improving the handling for many people first priority in your G37 tuning project.

Fully adjustable suspension allows you to fine tune the handling of you G37 often improving your drive.

We would go to a maximum drop of 24mm - 42 mm. on most models. You risk grounding out if you go lower than this.

Adding bigger discs and better high performance brake pads should make for radically improved stopping. (They will brake effectively over longer periods during heavy use than stock brakes will, but grip has more of a bearing on the cars ability to stop).

We should point out that race friction pads will be noisy and will need to be hot before they bit.

In every day driving the brakes are only used rarely, therefore won't be as effective at slowing you up so choose brake pads which have a low working temperature.

A nice wide torque band and sweet spot of peak power at one third of your RPM range is optimum.

Spending just a little money on the top engine and handling parts could transform your car into a credible track car.

The best power gains come from larger engine sizes. The more you start with the bigger the return on investment so engine swaps are good value mods for small engined cars.

Tuning modifications.

This list of the stages and uprated modifications are usually fitted by our members, decide how far you want to push your car before you get going.

Engine choices were fantastic and are good candidates for decent power gains with the right mods.

Getting the best performance upgrades for your planned usage of the car is a time and money saver. Stage 3 competition upgrades just don't work well on the road hard to control in slow traffic.

Best Engine Mods for your car

  1. Engine Tunes - engine tuning/remapping provides the most advantage in terms of cost savings,  aftermarket ECUs, and piggyback ECUs are all alternatives.
  2. Fast road cams are one of the most significant mechanical changes, but they must be installed by someone who knows what they're doing and they are not always easy to source but you might find a local firm to regrind a stock camshaft.
  3. Intake and Exhaust - Note that on their own these mods will NOT ADD POWER in most cases, but they can help enhance power after other mods by removing the restriction.
  4. Upgrades to turbochargers and superchargers - forced induction is the most efficient approach to increase air supply, allowing you to burn more fuel and make more power. It is one of the most costly upgrades but provides the best gains.
  5. Head work - The goals of porting and flowing the head are to get air flowing into the engine while removing flow restrictions and turbulence.

Typical stage 1 mods often include: Lighter flywheel, Engine Tunes/Remapping, Suspension upgrade (drop 24mm - 42 mm.), Panel air filter, Sports exhaust, Alloy wheels.

Typical stage 2 mods often include: Power/Sport clutch, fuel pump upgrades, Fast road cam, Ported and polished head, high flow fuel injector.

Typical stage 3 mods often include: Competition cam, Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Sports gearbox, Engine balancing, Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves).

Peak power is nice in motorsport but for a daily driven car you need a long power band and perhaps extending the rev range.

In this article we shall give a limited introduction to the best mods for your car, but we'd encourage you to spend some time on the site looking into the details of each type of performance mod. A fast road camshaft will be one of the best NASP power mods you can do from a single upgrade to your engine.

It maximises the intake and exhaust flow and pushes up the power if done right. Ideally you'd add other mods and finish up with a reflashed ECU. We'd also caution you not to go with a competition cam as this upsets the engines idling and general town driving characteristics.

Don't forget to look at the fuelling when you are increasing the power - it makes the car more thirsty.

Using high octane fuel is another option if you find you are suffering from detonation or premature ignition on your Infiniti project after fitting other tuning parts. Improved injectors will enable you to supply sufficient fuel to the engine.

If you are increasing your fuelling with bigger injectors you will also need to get a bigger fuel pump to supply it.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

Breathing mods are usually next up.  Contrary to popular belief there is often a small if any power gain obtained by fitting an induction kit, they only become beneficial and are recommended after you increase the engines power to the point where the standard air intake box cannot cope!

Induction kits can work well on turbo engines and larger engines (if supplied with a suitable cold air feed or air box), generally though we'd just recommend for G37 engines you should go with a performance panel air filter preferably made from cotton.

Sports exhausts can help balance the flow of air through the engine. But if the exhaust pipe is too big, ie: it's over 2.5 inches bore, you will lose a lot of the flow rate and end up losing power and torque.

gas flowing the head will allow you to maximise your air/fuel charge. Leave this to a professional though with a proper flow bench and machine tools.

Your clutch can lose you loads of power as the power goes up if it starts to complain and the standard clutches are only ever good for power gains of up to 40%. Fit a power clutch to avoid power loss through the transmission. The best mods we recommend for your G37 are fast road camshaft, remap, induction and exhaust, suspension.

NA (naturally aspirated) engines do not achieve big power gains if you tune/remap them, unless you have done extensive modifications. With turbocharged engines this is another story.

tuned/remapped turbo will give phenomenal power gains and fully release the potential power of the engine. Despite the large cost involved adding forced induction to a NA (naturally aspirated) engine will give large power gains. It is usually easier to bolt on a supercharger than it is to install a turbo. It is harder to map a turbo as the boost builds exponentially with rpm.

Superchargers will give a boost which is proportional to engine speed so is simpler. Alternatively you could perhaps fit water injection to reduce the risk of knock.

Alloy wheel upgrades.

The benefits of alloy wheels include lowering your unsprung weight and better brake cooling via the extra air flow they allow. Get a good directional tread pattern tire to improve your handling and help improve traction on your G37. Large G37 alloys can decrease performance. If you get big alloys you will be changing your final drive ratio.

With this in mind we would advise sticking to a maximum wheel size of 17 inches, although we know some of our members have with bigger wheels with no problems.
