What are your thoughts on Replicas?

Are they a car in their own right or is it a cheapskate way to own something better? Does it depend what car they are trying to be?

What about the MR2 Ferraris? MX5 Aston Martin?

Any guesses what this is and is pretending to be?

If replicas didn't exixt, you would never see an AC Cobra :)

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery ;)

Tastefully done replicas are a means of showing your appreciation for a rare car or a one off, be it a styling exercise or race car.

That photo looks like a Honda coupe trying to look like a Skyline.

And those jap cars that get converted to look like a Ferrari, why? Never understood the need to go that far, pointless and a good way of spending alot of money with very little chance of recuperation, might as well buy the real McCoy imo.

agree, i hate the mr2 - ferrari 355, the reason i hate mr2 and love the 355

im guessing its a Honda Integra R34 GTR Custom (1994)
i dont see a problem with replicas if tastefully and properly
done the best 1 i have personally seen was a countach rep it was lighter than the original, had a tuned cosworth engine, faster and more economical than the original and all the for the fraction of the price sounds good to me

An AC Cobra is a kit car isn't it? An I just thought we was on about immitations like making a standard escort Mk5 looks like a cossie?

AC Cobras are not kit cars. The replicas, however, are (mostly).

Genuine AC Cobras were built by AC Cars and Caroll Shelby. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC_Cobra

IMO the thread is about replicas, however they are produced.

IMO (again) I think that the AC Corba replica is probably one of the few imitations that actually work. Hell, there is even a club for them!

I had the privilege today to see three beautiful Hawk AC Aces & a stunning Stratos replica. These cars cost £40,000 & £50,000 to buy & build (maybe even more) & there is nothing superficial about them.
A good thing about replicas, A well built one seems to hold it's value too.

As far as the MR2 clones & the like, I suppose they have a place I just don't know where! To me they just look like car-toon car-icatures (i can do this allday ;)) of other cars & often their not cheap either!

Do Caterhams & Westfeilds count as replica's or are they built under license or sumfink?

Is that GTR replica real or a photochop? looks like a funny car dragster!!!

Someone might like this as well,

I know about the original Cobra but we was talking about replica Cobra's which I thought came under the Kit Car catorgery. The original Ac Cobra was banned for being to insane..... I'd have 1. A proper 1 that is.

Personally I'm not into replicas. I don't see the point in badging up a non-Type R as a Type R, or a non-GTR as a GTR.

Thats exactly what replica's I thought we was talking about. I don't see the point either like when someone does a Mk5 Escort to look like a cossie but it never turns out right. I think it's daft.

My daughters boyfriend saw a sad replica the other day, twas a Saxo VTS, had the kit, the badges and the looks....................except he noticed one of the 'alloy' wheels had its hubcap missing exposing a 3 stud wheel :blink1:

Whereupon he said "nice 1.1 mate!"

Confused, I am :)

Waynne asked about our thoughts on replicas. The kit car Cobras are imitations of the original AC Cobra, yes? In that case, they are replicas irrespective of being kit cars.

I am not aware of Cobras being banned. By whom?

Relpicas of what? If we are talking about the original Lotus 7, Lotus sold the rights to Caterham so they are not replicas.

Westfields, Robin Hoods, Daxes, etc don't pretend to be Lotuses and look different to the trained eye. A Caterham is like a Westfield in the same way a small Pug is like a small Renault to me :)

lol Thats just silly......:lol::lol::lol:

i think their is a little confusion with the word replica to me and i'll take the mk5 escort as the example as its been mentioned. a rep is for example a standard mk5 escort kitted up like a cosworth exactly the same as buying a mk5 escort cosworth kit car (dont think they make one just an example.) both car owners are after the same finish a car that looks like an escort cosworth but neither are really a cosworth hence the word replica hope this helps clarify things

Your definition is spot on Herb IMHO. You also got the car right - its based on an Integra.

When I posted this I was thinking mainly of making a standard car into a replica rather than building a replica from scratch but the Cobra is definately a replica.

I've also started a new thread on kit cars to get your thoughts on them.

A replica to me is something that looks like something better but thats it. It only looks the same..... A kit car is something built from scratch right? Thats why I still say the Cobra is a kit car. Because there is only 1 model and you have to build it from scratch rather than buy the standard version an make it look like the performance version. Thats my opinion anyway...

no id list the cobra as both replica and kit car.
reason being you can buy a ac or shelby corba, or you can buy a kit (which if remember seeing one of these getting built is still requires a donor car, unless your really good with a welder, think it was a serria in the documenty).

The Tojeiro is properly engineered and performs well; it isn't the cheapest Cobra replica on the market but neither is it the dearest and if you appreciate quality and service this is certainly one to consider.
sorry tn69 the webpage you gave even lists it as a replica

It might replicate a Cobra yes but it is infact a kit car. What i'm getting at is you can't buy any production car an make it like a cobra. You have to built one from scratch. Like using sierra chassis and mating it to a big v8. It's not like buying a Mk5 escort and making it look like a cossie is it? Thats what I see as a replica. Like I said before in my opinion a Cobra is a kit car.

No arguments about the Cobra being a kit car, but that isn't relevant to the discussion, IMO.

Webster's has two definitions of Replica - 1. An exact reproduction and 2. A copy exact in all details.

This makes the kit car Cobra more of a replica than the Mk5 Escort ;)

A kit car is not necessarily a replica, it is merely a car that one can buy in kit form (although a lot of kit car manufacturers can sell you a turnkey). However there are plenty of kits available that replicate existing or historic cars.

Modifying a particular car to look like a different version of the same model I would say is also a replica.

Some replicas are replicas of tasteful classic cars and to a certain extent tuned or engined to match the origional, these I can appreciate, but others are poor copies of modern cars for example the fiero/mr2 items which in no way match the real thing, these personally I don't like and normally assume are driven by people with no self respect who more than likely never left home and probably live around the Slough area, (It seems every time I am on the M4 around Slough I see one, Also they are so easy to spot from thr real thing, Anyone remember the metro based Audi tt replica, I think it was bantam or something, You would not need family planning if you owned one of those,

i saw a tt replica on another forum a while ago but the base car was a ford kack and ill be honest it didnt look to bad imo:embarrest:

If i remember correctly the banham was out before the audi tt and was just a coincidence they looked similar.
EDIT (Looks like it might have been a rip off of the Audi TT pr-production concept)

i like a good replica , there is no doubt that there is no subistute for the real thing BUT many real things are NEVER driven yet driven with spirit . there is a place for all things , be they good or bad its just a question of what floats your boat .

Well, depends.

A bodykit replica is - to me - another form of ricing.

However, an all-up replica, e.g a kit car or scratch-built car is special and should be cherished.

Ok i dont like replicas i hate seeing a done up escort trying to be a escort cossie its just WRONG nope dont like it in the bin!

but i bet theres probably more dressed up as the GT when they are the 55 models
you can normally tell anyway, if its a low model its normally getting ragged to keep up with most things where as the more sleeper cars seem to hang back a bit more.
well thats the case i normally see
